In my opinion- scam and not needed.
Plenty open enough mesh to allow fines into the air box and help coat air filters.

But that is just my opinion and others will have a differing opinion.
I guess the argument is that the flywheel always provides positive pressure, this gives it an exhaust. How would fines come back in?

Thats not really how air injection works. Air injection just positions the intake snorkel such that it draws from a lower pressure area. The large particles are expelled into the higher pressure side and as such it acts as a rudimentary filter of sorts.
The following video shows this well.

There's plenty of area for 'exhaust' already if that's what your concern is. I don't recall ever seeing a 'sealed' airbox. Most have holes placed in a way that reduces the amount of crap getting into the air box which usually makes them difficult to see from the outside.

Also, positive pressure in the intake would be a good thing as far as power is concerned so why would you want to deplete that?

It's not really positive pressure via air Injection. It just acts as a pre filter, sure there's air blowing up that channel but it's not enough to pressurize the air box. Heck kohler did the same thing on the k series engine back in the day. Didn't make them supercharged.
