I was wondering if any of you have used the ignition systems sold on ebay to change from points to breakerless. Or if there was a better option. I am looking at changing over an 070. Any help or pitfalls to watch out for would be appreciated.

Thanks

Tom

I picked up one on ebay, but I have not had a chance to install it yet. I did convert a 5HP briggs & stratton engine over to the "points and condensor less" ignition and it worked great.

I have converted a few, Husqvarna 140s, 240sg, 180s,163s to name a few.
Never had problems installing.

Take out the points and condenser, connect two wires, find somewhere to mount the module. The last part is the only challenging aspect and it is usually only a slight challenge for all but the severely mechanically impared.

Just got one and had the same question to the seller. Seems they use the magnetic signal from the coil to fire the coil.

Yeah, the only hard part is finding out where to mount it, and make it look
decent. One wire goes to the coil, the other to ground, and you might
have to reverse them, depending on the saw, otherwise it is easy.

points

Haven't put points back in a saw in about ten years. Many customer think the saw runs mutch better with a module. Also haven't found a saw it won't work on. Get one and don't look back.

So, there is no aftermarket module to convert the 070 090 saws over? Are these the only two saws in the STihl line that can't be converted? Thanks

Tom

Tom, I've talked to several old-timers and they answer they came up with was no, because of both the type of coil and the 4-magnet array on the flywheel. Apparently those aftermarket solid state modules cannot process the type of pulses put out by that coil, so what you get is intermittent spark. Saw-king and several others had tried without success.

Jacob, I have the four pole flywheel too. Wonder if it will work on the homelite or if I could remove two if the focus plates on my flywheel?
