Well, just a hacker here. Biggest saw is a Timberbear I can't use very long because it's so heavy...took two years to work out all the bugs.

I think some of you might like to read about some very economical mods done to the saw of a guy on the Woodheat chat group. Seems way too low to me, like maybe the mechanic opened the muffler and told a tall tale??

Here's the post:

I have a husky 359. I had a husky dealer who had take some special
classes soup mine up. He bore it out, put in a larger piston and
changed the exhaust for about $100. Now I have the same saw, with
twice the power, its an amazing difference.

If it's true, I'll send him my 029! But how about that boring the cylinder? Isn't that hard on the plating?

the plating is too thin to bore,,,,

If he did anything besides modding your muffler and retuning your carb he may have woods ported the saw,,, a woodsported saw that is done right will have amazing power gain over stock,,,,,,,,,,,,, ;)

Send me $100. I'll tell you the same thing, and pass the letter on:biggrinbounce2:

Boring out and replating isn't cheap, and not particularly practical in most cases. For your 029, you can just drop on an 039 cylinder/piston, but.. not cheap if you have to buy it.

Total BS but if you send me the saw I can guarantee I can make it twice as loud for $100.00 :) you pay shipping both ways!
There are a few dependable people who can get you moderate gains and not shorten the life expectancy of a work saw. If you are told amazing gains or twice the power I think you might be making serious tradoffs on useability. Be suspicious! You wont find much for less than $250. either and that will get you about 30% over stock.

I saw that this morning. I usually read the woodheat stuff, but seldom post. My response:

I think you're either confused about what he did, or he lied to you.

Saw modifications in modern saws with aluminum cylinders with nikasil
or chrome-plated lining do NOT involve overboring an existing
cylinder. They involve modification of the transfer ports, increasing
compression, lightening the piston, and things of that sort.

Most people who modify a 359 either change the port timing and port
size, or modify the saw by putting a modified 357xp cylinder on the
359 crankcase (taking advantage of the performance potential found in
the difference in crankcase volume between a full-radius and typical
crank).

For $100, I could see him swapping a non-cat muffler, modifying the
muffler, and portmatching the exhaust, gasket, and muffler. You
should probalby check out exactly what it was that he did do to your
saw, because overboring and swapping a larger piston...nope.

I think we get spoiled here at AS, having so many people who actually know a thing or two about saws. A visit to the forums at **********, ?????????.com, or the woodheat mailing list...amusing. Sort of.
