Honestly look for deals on Oregon chain online. I paid ten bucks for a used rental 72dl Stihl chain that was also a safety chain, which ended up as a meh deal. I also got the same chain in Oregon exl (much better than Stihl safety chain) brand new for 16.25 on Amazon. I’m kinda a cheapskate but I haven’t found any Chinese chains that were cheap enough to surpass the value on Oregon.

Check eBay too, I’ve found good deals on chain bundles there. In 3/8 I have bought loops of new Oregon and new Husky chain for less than it would cost to make it yourself.

I cut a lot of dirty wood myself and I just started to sharpen my chains more often instead of buying semi chisel or carbide. No experience with carbide but I have found that if my wood is really dirty I have to sharpen after one tank whether it’s semi or full chisel. And I figured if I’m sharpening that much I ought to cut faster at least. Just my personal observations. My logs come from a lot made of road millings before I get them so I’m fighting pretty abrasive stuff.

Cheapest chain I have seen are loops of Chinese made chain on Amazon or Ebay. Last time I did that I got four loops of chain whose drivers are slightly too thick so the chain does not turn well on the bar when fully tight. They're about .002 thicker than drivers on other reputable chains I have. That's enough to make them unuseable on my bars. Just too much friction.

The cheapest chain that won't suck is Baileys house brand. Its made by Carlton. It does not stay sharp as long at Stihl chain but it's close, and costs much less.

If you have dirty wood use semi chisel chain. It'll last longer.
