Those large boxes of spare Stihl parts were not free were they? To be fair to the cost of the repair you have to assign value to the parts you "had lying around".

Picking pieces out of the boneyard is gravy money. No cost, since their value went to zero when their host gave up the ghost. Scavenging is a great way to get the oink out of the pig.

Sure it is, Tom. But only if you happen to have all those pieces laying around or have them otherwise available.

Not many of us do. I have no Stihl parts whatsoever, for example, and I doubt if it would be out of line to say my purchase of that dead saw would represent an awfully poor value. As Bill G points out, I'd have nearly $200 in it. I can buy one that runs pretty well from a dealer's trade-in rack for just a little more, and know that he'll do something for me if it turns out to have a toasted rod bearing, or etc.

Am I being nit-picky? Maybe so... I just assume an answer on a general forum is directed to a general reader. I do stand corrected on the $50 head kits, I admit I was wrong there. Where are the Husky ones...at that price I'll take a dozen 272XP!

...if you happen to have all those pieces laying around...

That's what I meant. If the saw in the auction was junk inside but had good body parts and I had a smashed saw, it might not be a bad deal. Going inside, sight unseen, is risky as everyone agrees.

Since I stopped using Poulan 25s my boneyard is kind of thin. It is nice to take a "free" part off a dead saw and save the time and money going to the saw shop. The point I was trying to make was that the junk saw's parts had a zero value sitting on the shelf but a retail value once they were back in service. Just a hair splitting with Sedanman :)

Pretty much free

No, they were not free, but almost. Mostly from my dealer. They get many saws in for trade in, or smoked saws from a newbie using some screwed up tuning procedure and running his saw lean and trashing a cylinder or bearings. Some saws they get are from somebody who tore it down with a problem, and couldnt do anything with it, so they took it in for a new saw. So i buy the bits and pieces, the baskets, boxes, etc..whatever they bring in.
No, they are not free, but dang close to it.

I picked up a very sweet 034 on one of those deals. It was supossed to have trashed cylinder, and need a new one. The cylinder looked perfect, no wear, no gouges. But it was dry, no oil in there at all. It almost looked like they washed it down.....probably straight gas.

I oiled it up, refueled it...then no spark. Replaced the coil, and it fired right up!

I think I gave them $50 for that saw. Thats pretty much the going rate for anything he has.

He has an 028, and an 038, plus an old 056. I should make him adeal on all three, but i am not a big fan of the 028 or 038.

local shop

My local Stihl guy won't part with any used or scrap saws. I have been there needing a few parts and ask for used ones I know that he has (I can see the shelf inthe back room with them sitting there) and every time I ask they are not for sale. Whats up with that?? sort of pisses me off since I figure a used part for the used saw I have would be just fine to keep the cost down. I know this guy is not the norm as I've been to other shops outside the area I'm in and they almost always will make a deal on the used scrap saws since they are cash in their pocket since they probably gave next to nothing for them.

Mine won't either. My guess is that the mechanic takes them and rebuilds them and does something with them. Like sell them on ebay or in the trading post. I live 30 mins from the Stihl HQ and can't seem to get a used saw anywhere. I had to buy one on ebay from a dude in Canada. How strange is that?

They probably just use the parts for fixing tradeins. They would be better to keep them out of sight though to remove temptation!. There is lots of lost time in selling used parts. Returns, want disassembly, want free advice to go with the used part, want to dicker. Keeps them from otherwise buying a new saw sometimes. Not every would-be used parts customer would be this way, but enough negatives with the policy that some dealers opt out.

And why are you not a fan of two of the best saws Stihl made ? The 038 is a tough saw and still commands a high price. I have at least one of all 3 of the main versions, 038, 038S, and 038 Mag. I think most guys here would agree that the 028 and 038 are da''m good saws.

As for parting out saws true it may seem they are "free" but they are not. Every usable item has value. If you do not believe me check with the numerous guys that are parting out saws and selling parts on ebay. If junk items have no value then why is the scrap car/truck part market so lucrative ?

If you meant $100 in parts then I missed that because that is not what you said. You said you could have a screamer for under $100. If just the parts is what you were talking about then I have a 100 such saws I would gladly sell you.

As the case so many times, what i said and want I meant must have been two different things. That used to get me into a lot of trouble with the ex too!

I am not a big fan of the 028's and 038' mostly because of the weight. An 034/036 weighs alot less, and is a faster saw, just maybe not as much torque. If your sawing all day, this can make a huge difference as oppsoed to somebody just doing a cut every now and then.

I am kind of amazed at the controversey that a junk 026 on ebay can stirr up!

I totally realize that used parts cost money. (read my other posts about BUYING them from my dealer)

If i bought a saw for $50, used a cover and oiler off of it, and threw the rest in the box, then to me it becomes free parts becuase i have a return on my investment in hand, saw paid for..now the rest all goes towards the bottom line. At that point, they are free parts!
