I asked this question in the nursey forum but only got one response i know we got more smart guys here than that i was wondering

My wife and her brother went to erie and picked cherries for the day. Can I use the seeds inside the cherrys to plant and grow, or they not ready yet. I was thinking i would have to wait for them to rot and fall off the tree?

To answer your first question: Here is a link to the page on Prunus in the Woody Plants Seed Manual

HOWEVER, maybe the more important question is: What kind of tree will you get?

Almost all domesticated fruit trees are grafted. They take a branch off of the tree they like and graft it to any old root stock. The cherries that develop are only the result of the branch that was grafted. All of the trees grafted from a given tree are identical - then if you graft branches from that new tree, they remain genetically identical.

The cherries that grow on the tree from your seeds "do" have the genetics that you like in there...but there there is also a whole bunch of other genetic material in there - meaning it is quite unlikely that you'll get a cherry similar to what you seed is.

Sorry for the lack of clarity... Yes, it will grow a cherry tree - and it may very well produce good cherries, but probably not just like the ones you got off of it.

cool thanks for the info...

u know anywhere i can learn how to graft trees? i am trying to learn ALL aspects of tree service for i want to be master tree guy from seed to stump!

I can't help with grafting.

You might try a local nursery or an orchard. Most orchards buy their trees, but some may graft - or may well have somebody there that at least knows how.

A nursery or orchard would know but they might not be doing it at the time you want to go see it done.

I Grafted apple trees in Horticulture class its really easy once you know what your doing.

We had a book that had a whole bunch of diagrams of how to do it. Maybe you should pick one up and read probably find all the information you would need.

Try the local agricultural extension service or county agent. (State government agency Usually a brance of a local university)

Way back in the dark ages when I was a kid the 4 H club had a forestry program for kids that talked a little about grafting. Search the internet you can learn just about any thing you want to there.

Just a few Ideas.

there are a bunch of different types of grafts PM me and I can explain an easy way, unless everyone wants to hear my piece. Do you have access to grafting wax?
