I find just the opposite. Carpenter ants tend to stay away from locust in my neck of the woods. I guess they have too much soft maple, ash, cottonwood, and mulberry to work on. Lots of farmers use locust for fence posts.
 
Since my home is wood I split the stuff where it lays to see if there is ants in it then will spray them if there is and let it lay for a while before bringing home.
I have a bigger problem with spyders.
