The Stihl 070 is an ancient design but none the less it is Stihl's engineering and design that went into that saw. The Communist Chinese of the PRC care nothing of patents or intellectual property and produce worthless counterfeit merchandise dumped mostly in the USA. I did not like it when Bailey's announced they would be selling counterfeit 090s and 070s. I did not like it when they changed and announced they would be selling 090 and 070 (and other?) kits to circumvent the EPA. Please, just spend a little time and money and buy the original product. Also, be aware that you are buying a design from when... the fifties? or maybe the 40s? Don't expect it to run like a current saw.
BTW I have an 090 that runs great and pulls a 4' and a 5' bar with authority. It also shakes so much I'm afraid I might set off the San Andreas fault. I really want to try an SP125.
where the heck, in the USA, do you buy an original 070 or 090, a new one? Used, in competition with a thousand guys who search all the USA craigslist and ebay so they can have 18 of the same old big saws sitting on a shelf?
OK, look at it this way, do you REALLY get all your vehicle parts OEM at your local vehicle dealer? do you ever buy aftermarket car/truck parts from the autoparts store?
I understand full complete copies, with a fake name on them, but parts...we have a global economy now, it isn't changing,no mattyer how much we want it to change.
I don't like it the wall street short sighted fast profits crowd offshored millions of manufacturing jobs, I myself have lost THREE, count 'em, THREE, factory jobs in a row to overseas, that's when I quit even looking at factory jobs, but I have to live in the real world of *today*, and that means, you are gonna be buying foreign made products now and then, even from China.
I'd bet five bucks cash right now that just about every single dude here reading this thread has got some or a lot of chinese electronics used in accessing the web, be it phone, iFad device, laptop, desktop. Do they give up that up because it is from china? I have yet to see a single guy ranting about china on the net give up their chinese sourced access.
I am NOT a big supporter of them, don't get me wrong, I think their society and government sucks, I mean, it is downright creepy sometimes, but in today's world, we are stuck with it. (of course I feel about the same about our own alleged government..sucks and is creepy

)
As an aside, they are pretty darn far from being commies anymore, they are about as capitalistic as it gets. Just sayin' ....they just kept the name and the same totalitarian government, but when it comes to business, cash rules. They are probably the MOST capitalistic people on the planet now. And they ain't going away, and they will be improving what they make, inevitable, they have competition up the wazzoo there. If there's a real actual bonafide demand for better quality for some widget, some company there will make it eventually.
I remember when I was a kid in the 50s, people ranted on and on, said exactly, word for word for word, the same thing about Japan and their products. All junk, cheap copies, etc, by the 60s they were selling a LOT of stuff, by the 70s they started stepping on the car companies toes, by the 80s they were taking names. Now...they build some of the best stuff on the planet. Didn't take long in historical terms, and dang china is like what ten times larger in population, and trying to put everyone to work? And are getting good at it? They went from high tech there was old soviet copies of tractors to actually getting some dudes in space in like 20-25 years?
They are gonna just slap dominate the 21st century, inevitable now, short of all out, human race (what would be left of it) back to the stoneage global war. That's the only thing that will stop them at this point, the whole planet going under, in hideous fashion. Short of that, they will just keep advancing. Wishing and hoping ain't gonna change a thing.
And if you read a little of the US past history, we were a little, shall we say, fast and loose with "intellectual property" vis a vis european stuff back in the day, when we were getting going with manufacturing. Aw heck, I'll be real, we stole everything that wasn't freekin nailed down, every design on anything, "copied" it. Then worked with it, and went on to do our own thing.
Again, just sayin'....everyone in past history copied to get ahead, it's just dang human nature and it's silly to think it is some new weird phenomenon when it ain't, or that somehow the chinese are so much worse than anyone else ever was. They aren't, they just are THE BIGGEST the planet has ever seen to date. By ww2, we assuredly got to be the biggest (after first copying like crazy), that was then, this is now. It's just their turn, that's all, just reality.
There's a phrase that describes this better, it isn't intellectual property, that's just cutsie pie lawyerspeak so they can make easy money, once anything is out in the open, once human beings have an idea and it gets out there, by any reason, it is just there, so it is more real to call "intellectual" property imaginary property. Because, no matter how many laws or regulations are set, how many treaties, any of that lawyer jazz, you can't grab and hold on to an idea. It just isn't possible.
All cultures/empires/nations have used what was out there, then someone else copied them, and so on. It just happens, it has always happened, and it always will happen, as long as we are human.
