Chip containment on tracked stump grinders

What we need ... a vacuum that works underneath and forces into the chute and into the back of your pickup all in the same machine. For what they ask on these machines it should already be there now!

Is the tracked carlton better than the wheeled machine? why?

A tracked grinder will ride up on the debris pile as it makes it. Thus hugely increasing the effective containment volume. If grinding depth becomes an issue its a simple matter to back up and fork a bit of debris from the front of the hole to where the back of the tracks will be, thus building up a sloped track into the stump.

Chip size makes quite a difference too - Large chips take up less space.
200 hours back I changed from multi-tips to a sparse set up of the largest green teeth. And I now find that I need to back up to regrade far less frequently.

(This cutter change was specifically for the stony conditions I mainly work in, and very satisfactory too; its halved my cutter costs and removed all the hassle and frustration.)

Traction! And better dispersment of weight. You just have to be very careful when turning on someones yard.

I guess I knew the answer to my question - it's the same reason I run a tracked mini skid vs a wheeled one. You can drive over/through anything.

How stable are these bigger self-propelled machines? Are they less or more stable than the smaller self-propelled units? I've had to try to pick up a dumped 252 before - not much fun. I'd sure hate to see a 60tx or 7015 dumped on it's side!

It seems very stable to me. I did a large job (7 hours of grinding) yesterday over some pretty hilly terrain and it seemed fine.

Another advantage of the tracks is you just hit a button on the remote to shrink the tracks to get thru a gate instead of having to unbolt the outside wheels.

The only grinder Ive ever had that really contained it's chips was a 665 B but only any good if you had 7' 9" to gain access ! I used to find that my 60TX did a reasonable job until I fitted greenteeth which as a couple of you have mentioned tend to throw chip around. I now find the sandvik on my 8018 ideal, very little gets thrown around and both the 7015 and 8018 have the power to track through the grindings. As I grind a stump I drop the dozer blade down to about 6" above the ground level and as you move forward you bring the grindings with you. As for stability the carlton's are much better than the vermeer's as the vermeer engine is much higher. My 99hp 8018 is 2900kgs and find keeping the head swung up hill on side slopes and going down steep hills blade first get me in to some very tough spots, places where I would never have got the 60tx or my old tow unit.On very bad and steep surfaces that may be very wet or loose top soil I attach a winch cable from jeep or in one extreme job with a 30' drop at the far side of the stump we used a chain back on to a 13 ton excavator ! I run the cable a little slack and it's just in case you get a slide so far never had a problem but better safe than sorry !

My 8018 TRX has gone where no wheeled machine could go. You can bottom out sometime and get stuck. You can then use the wheel to lift the machine and pull the machine out. If and when I order another Carlton Track machine, I will get a winch added on it.

I have a 7015 and can go where no-one in my area can go with a wheeled machine no-way no-how period. I just had a heart attack and will be getting out of this business so will be selling my 7015 with remote and sandvik cutter wheel. It doesn't throw chips anything like the square stock teeth and its like not throwing chips at all compared to green-teeth. This is the best machine I have ever used. It has 26 hours and is like new. If you are considering a tracked machine and buy one you will probably never use a wheeled machine again. I also have a 4400-4 and haven't touched it since buying this one. I will be selling both and have other equipment as well BC2000 with grapple, 98 ford with aerial lift of conn 55 ,other chippers as well. Again tracked is awesome its like flying or walking ,if you grind alot of stumps you will get alot more work done I PROMISE. Pm me if any interest
