Chip weight

I weighed several batches at my shop and found none of them to be heavier than 550 lbs per cubic yard. Softwood chips are much lighter. The bottom line for me was that no F-350 or equivalent had the payload for a load of chips. In fact, an F-350 with an Arbortech body is overweight empty (they told me this themselves)

If I got a m3 of log and chipped it I take it ... it would be more than m3 after chipping due to air space.

Now I reckon, from the thread here on tossed firewood vs stacked where 50% increase in volume for same weight of firewood resulted that the stacking of woodchip would be better than that of tossed firewood.

So I would work on a 25% increase factor, meaning if you chipped a 1m3 log it would turn out to be 1.25m3

Based on this theory, 0.8m3 of log chipped would equal 1m3 of chip, same weight though.

So refer to your log charts for the appropriate weight of the timber and calculate the factor.

Also, if there's foliage etc of course it will be lighter... however your opening question was kind of vague

Can any of you guys tell me what chip weighs per yard on average?

Sort of like when a customer rings you and asks what the average price of cutting a tree down is. :hmm3grin2orange:
