Chipper needed on the fly, what do you think of this one?

I would stay as far far away from that chipper as far I could. Look at the chute , see how close those feed wheels are??? It was that style chipper that started all the longer feed tables on chippers for safety. It wouldn't take too much for someone to get their hand into those wheels and and into the revolving disc. The partner I was in business with witnessed an accident just like I described, with those early style Morbarks, wasn't pretty, took most of his guys forearm before they could stop it, but it was too late. I'm surprised to see that style around, anyone who had that style chute was getting them retrofitted for safety reasons, unless you plan on redesigning that chute.

Just my two cents worth.

Larry, You have a point-but I think that is a cool curbside feed design. The big issue is KEEP YOUR HANDS OUT OF THE FEED CHUTE! (FWIW My Olathe has about the same length feed table)

Looks like a good chipper for the money. I like the crurbside feed, it looks odd but is faster than dragging brush into the street for a rear feed modle. How many hours on the motor? You could pull that easily with your 2500HD, also with a far amount of chips. Good luck on your chipper hunt. I enjoy looking at all the chippers in tree trader every month. If money were no object I would probly buy a new chuck & duck, WOOD CHUCK with diesle power plant.....the color would be white with crome wheels.... OHH and pull it with a F550 4x4 diesle.......red.

Maybe I'm out of touch w/ the used equipment market but I can't see paying $4200 for a 22 year old machine. But thats just me.

Mike, You are out of touch with the used equipment market. Your region is replete with used arboricultural equipment. As you move west it gets rarer. A 22 year old car may only be worth 500 bucks but a working piece of arbo equipment is valuable.

I would not buy a chipper that can be feed only from the side. You will find that to be a problem. What happens if you have to back down a driveway and they have hedges or walls on the side where you park? Even if it is 10 ft. wide, you are going to struggle with the brush. I can think of a lot of other situations where it would have been impossible for me to work with a side feeder. Today in fact. We worked on a narrow street, only 20 ft. wide and had to park as close as we could to the 6 ft. high wall. It would have been impossible to use a side feeder at that location. I admit there have been times when a side feeder would have been better, but the rear feeder still worked very well. I cannot say the same thing about the side feed. It will either be OK or not work at all. I have never come across a situation where I could not get the rear feeder to work well.

Chipper needed on the fly

I won't want this chipper as the rear feed is the only way to go. Also engine is not large enough. I won't settle less than an 80+ diesel engine.

Thanks for the 411 Justin. I figured I might be missing something in the equation. :)

Treejunkie,
Have you found a chipper yet? Talk to us, we want to help you pick a good one. I think with the ice storm the mid west just encountered will drive the price of chippers up a bit. :(

Still looking guys. I've only reached one person so far. I'm going to hold off for now b/c we didn't get quite as much damage as i was hoping for. However, I'm gonna be headed to Wichita this weekend to check it out. Apparently the were hit pretty hard. I'll make my decision to by when i see what kind of situation there is down there.

If not i'm gonna keep my eyes open b/c i'm gonna be buying one by april irregardless.

Thanks for the tips guys. I do agree that chipper is definitely not ideal. Pretty doesn't really matter, i'm pretty good w/ a paint gun; thus operating condition is most vital.

Junkie, just holler at me, I'll come chip you're stuff. I bought a 99 vermeer bc1250a with perkins turbo diesel last weekend for $7,000. It was a pretty good deal. Used it all day today and the past week , and loved it. Seriously though, if you got some bigger jobs that are more than you want to mess with we'll come do the cleanup if the $$ can be right. PM me if you're interested....
