For lots of reasons, we would like to process/dispose of prunings in place from 20 acres of grapevines. One option is a specialized rototiller/mulcher designed to incorporatie orchard waste into the ground. While we evaluate that option, we would also like to experiment with a chipping/shredding option. The prunings aren't large (much less than an 1", for the most part), but the operator needs to be able to pick up multiple prunings from the ground and have the unit process them without much operator assistance (i.e., high degree of self feeding).
Will a self-feed chipper in the 4"-6" range work the best, or do we need a unit with a shedder? From what I can tell, the shedders on the chipper/shredder units are usually gravity feed. I'm guessing that an operator will spend more time helping large volumes of prunings through a shredder than he will through a chipper with a self-feed feature. Am I guessing right on that? Is there any disadvantage to using a dedicated chipper to process a large volume of relatively small diameter dormant grapevine shoots?
Thanks in advance for any experience or advice you have to offer.
