I will take some pictures soon for the visual but here's how it goes.

You've felled a tree you want to just run through the chipper, or have a big top that should go right through.

1) Attach the cable not on the butt but instead 6-8 feet or more further along the piece to a sturdy spot.

2) Run the cable along the trunk until you get to the butt end and make a loop in the cable (the side of the loop that is headed to the chipper should be on the away, from the chipper, side of the loop so it won't just slip off the butt) and put it around the butt. This will help to keep the butt up and stop the butt end from digging in as it drags.

3) Drag the piece right to and up onto the feed table as far as you can.

4) Reverse the winch for slack and undo the loop from the butt, leaving the cable still attached to deeper in the piece and give a final pull to get the piece to the feed wheels.

5) Engage the feed wheels briefly to allow the piece to start through. If the feed wheels don't grab it, give another pull with the winch.

6) Disengage the feed wheels and detach the cable

7) Retract the cable completely (can be very noisy if the cable goes through chipper)

8) Reengage the feed wheels and run the piece the rest of the way through.

Trick...?

NO offense to you tree division, but I think anyone who has run chipper or done any rigging understand how to tie a half hitch before you tie your running bowline (or in thie case of achipper you clip the cable unto itself).. If you dont know this gig, and you haea chipper witha winch....then why have it, you would still have to lift huge peice of wood into the feed wheels.

I wouldn't have explained it if someone hadn't asked. Look I'm just hanging on a Sunday and I am harrased for a simple posting on technique, there are a certin number of newbies and new groundsmen that frequent this site I imagine. If this is how this forum rolls I'm glad to find out now.

You know, I never thought of wrapping half hitches in cable. Actuall I have, I think it not good to do becasue it can kink the cable.
I have always just used tongs and kept my cables straight or another piece of chain.
But this is a good idea if you use rope for your winch.
