What would be a good home owner grade chipper? We would like to have one but don't know a lot about them.

From a pro standpoint none of the consumer grade chippers have much appeal. They are all slow and require effort to feed (in my limited observations).
Speaking in generalities-the bigger the disc (flywheel) the better. Horsepower is important but when choosing between machine A with horsepower and disc weight/diameter XY and machine B with 1/3 less HP but a bigger disc I'd go with B. I don't know how much you anticipate using a chipper but if you have anything more than a couple of fruit trees or small ornamentals to prune every year or so I would suggest that you look for a used light industrial grade machine. -Something like a Wood-Pro or Bearcat. will make you say "Cool!" instead of "#@%$! ^*^*$$&#!!!+++)(*_&(^%!"

Kenn, Someone else can set me straight if I'm wrong but I think that the 6" Bailey's machine is a Crary Bearcat branded for Bailey's. -And I do think it looks pretty decent.

6 inch is too small? For a home owner chipper?

Does Pea want to chip the occasional branch or whole trees?

six inch bandits are ok,just not the 25hp ones there is a huge difference in a 40hp diesel prefferably the hatz/duetz engines. The new ones with a kohler25hp petrol or lombardi diesel are trouble with a T.ive used all of these the newest with the lombardi it was a POS however the 40hp was fine i would happily have one.when lookin at smaller machines make sure to check how big the infeed wheels are some are to small and you will limb everything.if you dont want leaf block go a chuck n duck

Has anyone had any experience with this machine or one like it?

I do mostly pruning and this capacity seems OK.

You may just try renting a chipper to see what works best. I started with a little 10 Hp chipper (home owner type) And it was way too much work for the amount of branches I was doing. Then I bought a Vermeer 625 with the 25 Hp Kohler motor. What a difference. That is a expensive hunk of machine to use once a year if that is all that you would be doing though

That capacity is what I'm looking for. I work every day pruning. (excluding rain and waiting on estimate appoval and ...)

I don't do take downs or jobs where big wood is always having to be consummed. Sometimes and that work is an exception, often I bring people who prefer that kind of work to handle those parts.

Thanks,
Jack

Hey, you lechers, be nice now!!!

pea, I'll ask a client of mine for the name of the homeowner style chipper he purchased after researching them all. It works quite well for him....He lives on a slope with no access from below. The only other alternative is to set up a high line winch rig, which both he and I did, using our own designs, prior to his chipper purchase.

pea, if you're a trust fund kid, and get that BC 2000, let me know when all your needs are met...and i'll take it off your hands.;):blob2:

I have a reforestation project, consequently I never go anywhere else. I have been thinking that one of the Vermeer, 3-point hitch, PTO driven units would be good. They have a 6 inch and a 9 inch.

Does anyone have experience with these machines? I like the maneuverability of a tractor mount, at least that is my prediction. I have a John Deere, four wheel drive, 73hp diesel utility tractor to put it on.

give these boys a try im sure one of there 5 inch machines with a small diesel are the thing for you..i have a 6 inch machine and i think there ''mustard'' [quaint english word for good ]
