High All,

Can anyone tell me what a chrome cyl looks like when it starts to "Flake"

I have a couple of old Homelites (all run well) & some of the cyls have what appear to be very light brown colored (almost like a light rust color) spots on them.

Although they appear to be smooth, (and dont look like they are flaking) and there is no scoring, i was just wondering if this is the beginning of the chrome starting to flake.

Any thoughts/insight appreciated.

Mike

Sounds like old junk starting to rust.

Just kidding, you Homelite nuts.
How do you observe these spots? Is the saw torn down?
Muffler off? Just curious.

If the spots are at/around/in the finger ports, those are spots where oil is 'burnt' onto the material.
This is due to any combination of the following; normal fuel mix flow patterns, out of round cylinder (rare), and/or chrome was/ has thinned thru normal wear.

Chrome will normally have a shiny like appearance.
If the cylinder bore is chemically cleaned (gas/carb cleaner work), and it is shinny, it's ok.
But if that area is gray-darker, then the chome is worn away, and the metal seen is base aluminum.
