I went up on the roof today to look to see if the chimney needed cleaning. I guess the home inspector didn't see the obvious broken clay liner in the chimney 4 long months ago. Just curious how you would repair the liner? I can see the top two liner/tiles are broken and cracked, should I replace the whole liner?

I guess you will want the specifications . Exterior wall, approximately 20' cinder block with clay liner.

Thanks!
Duane

I would be talking to that home inspector! That could have been fixed on the previous home owners dime.
My brother had his re-lined, it wasn't cheap, I want to say in the 2-3k area.

I wouldn't repair it , I'd remove it and replace with a stainless insulated liner instead. That's s like paying a mechanic to put a new crate engine in a rusty 82' ford fairmont , it's a waste of time and money when there are far better options

The liner my brother had put in his was some sort of concrete. They ran a bladder down the chimney and pour it in, then remove the bladder. It made a 7 or 8" round liner. The chimney wasn't lined before and was around 12" square. I believe the brand of the system was Superflue or something to that effect. Company is out of Maine (where he lives)

Now in the case with an already lined chimney, generally they are 6-8" square. If you stuff down a stainless liner wouldn't it make a pretty small chimney?

Agreed with the insulated SS liner fix. It'll cost ya but will last pretty much forever.

Clay liners can crack and break under overfire conditions. I've seen this happen. They're great for oil and gas burners but I'm leery of using 'em for wood heating.

Thanks for the responses. I am not 100% sure what the chimney was originally built for. So I am thinking when the new wood stove goes in so will a liner. I will only need to sell a few gallons of plasma to be able to get this paid for by Christmas!! I haven't priced online yet, but the two dealers I know of were both around $530 for the stainless liner kit. Is that a reasonable price?

It's been a few years now since I installed mine, but if I remember correctly I paid around $700 for 24'. $530 for 20' sounds in the ball bark.
