I will again be offering my class in basic tree worker skills (climbing and rigging) at MSU-Bottineau in Bottineau, North Dakota this spring. The dates are May 31 - June 1. Cost is $131 USD per person. The class may be taken for 1 semester credit and is part of both our online Basic Grounds Worker Skills Certificate program and our soon to be announced online Diploma program in Urban Forestry. As a reference text, I suggest The Tree Climber's Companion by Jeff Jepson, 2nd Edition, which is available on line or at our bookstore.

All equipment is provided, however, you may bring your own if you so desire.

Rooms are available at the college for $12/ night/person, one of the local motels, or you may camp out at one of the area campgrounds if you desire.

To register call admissions office at 1-800-542-6866

Join us for an enjoyable introduction to the sport and career of Tree Climbing

This is the student discount, available to all students who take the class. You have to admit that the school has a pretty good price when you consider some of the other training programs, several of which I have taken at one time or other over the past 38 years. Besides you are in the clean air of North Dakota and don't have to worry about the Ohio flooding you out. You can work most of the day over a busy street and have only 20 cars go under the tree you are working in. And you get to meet me!!! How much more can you ask for????

Heavy duty insect repellent!!! :D

Not generally needed that early in the spring, but later in the summer we train them to airlift us into the tree. It saves time and energy.

That sounds like a heck of a price to me. I have several classes that the book alone cost more than that. The book for my Spanish class was $200 and the book for my Calculus class was $160.

basic groundsworker certificate(whats that?) how long ya been climbing? and is this an i.s.a affiliate org.? just curious!!! Doug, LXT......................

The basic grounds worker certificate is a program designed to provide basic knowledge for a newcomer to the grounds keeping field. It includes arboriculture, turf management, soils, dendrology, and basic skills (climbing). All classes are NCA accredited college classes and fully transferable to any other program. It was designed to let a person get credit for extra effort in the form of that transcript that employers like so well when you apply for a new position in an online format so that it could be done while a person is fully employed. Also, some who have tried these classes, have decided that school is not as bad as they thought and have gone on to additonal studies.

Minot State Univerisity-Bottineau Campus is a two year college, specializing in the the natural resource field (forestry, horticulture, wildlife conservation, environmental technology, etc.). It was started as the North Dakota School of Forestry in 1906. The focus has changed to meet the needs of the industry. It started as a production nursery/shelterbelt program, and has gone through commercial logging to its current emphasis on urban tree care, arboriculture, and the PHC approach.

I have been teaching since 1991, started climbing with Davey Tree in 1967, ran my own tree care business in Illinois for 12 years, grounds arborist at Western Illinois University for 8 years. Also worked in Colorado while in the service. I currently do contract climbing and operate a small local tree care business in the summers to support my hobby of teaching. I teach this class starting with the assumption that you have no idea what you are doing. If it is a more advanced group than this, then we get into a variety of climbing hitches, equipment and techniques to solve more specific challenges or make the work easier.

Thanks for asking LXT. It is good that people check out these sorts of things before they jump in.

Where did your dad work out of? Did he go through the climbing school in Kent, or just start with OTJ training? I started with Bernard Newsome's crew in Youngstown Ohio, Walter Shields was the foreman, worked with an excellent climber named Jim Mummo (sp), and an old gentleman by the name of Paul ? who was an artist when trimming small crabs. Worked there the summers of 67 and 68 while in college. Big pay $2.15 to $2.50/ hour.
