I'm looking for a stiff climbing line, have been looking at sterling ropes... any ideas?

oh boy, here we go again lol. this is one of the most common questions on here. this post belongs in the climbing 101 section... the two main factors in choosing a lifeline is cost and climbing method. most likely you want something common if your just getting started. the only sterling ropes worth anything are their htp lines and if you intend to use that rope often and for years to come you dont want it, its a kernmantle line and will get really tight and nearly impossible to tie after awhile. either you want a 16 strand or a double braid. i use lava, which is a double braid. i have been very happy with it. 16 strand has been the standard for a generation but it seems like most people are moving toward a double braid. most common double braids i know of are lava and poison ivy. the more common 16 strands are safety blue white and pretty much all of the arbormaster series of ropes. i started on a kernmantle rope and it didnt take long for it to be a pain in my ass. after that i got the lava (double braid) and i have been happy with it. good luck, be safe and have fun bud

cost doesnt matter have been climbimg for over 30 years and have used just about every rope out there except sterling. I do have a sterling cut res. buck line(amazing).tree master is about the stiffest rope i've used, but i'm always looking for something differnt i use arbormaster daily and agree that with u on the kernmantle lines wasn't pleased with the lava either..old school climber stuck in old school was'y i guess lol but thanks for the imput... oh and i use SR technique

Why do you want a stiff climbing line? What technique annd equipment do you use?

SR technique i prefer a stiffer rope for many reasons less apt to get hung up easier to maneuver around larger leads and a whole lot faster.the 3 strand tree master was my fav. for decades but im slowly adapting to newer equiptment and techniques.I was asking about sterling line cause i've only used there buck lines and very pleased with that and was interesed in sterlings tech 125 or tritech i know there $$ but i really don't care about price.Just looking if anyone has used either one?

If you're climbing SRT and want a really stiff rope then you might look at kernmantle statics. There are some very stiff ropes out there, mostly used by cavers for SRT work. They don't hold a knot well.

I disagree... I like my Bluemoon (better than Arbormaster), but it is not as stiff as others, if that is what he wants. Arbormaster is the stiffest I have climbed on...and is certainly stiffer than Bluemoon (and, I'd assume it's twins). I am not saying there isn't something he'd like more...but just saying of the ones I have used, Arbormaster is the stiffest.

If you really want a stiff rope, how about 3 strand ;)

If you are looking for something extremely stiff (like a wire), New England Rope makes their Escalator product for SRT access. It seems to be its own unique thing. So stiff its hard to tie knots in.

You're right, I didn't mean to imply that I thought those lines were stiff, just that I like 'em..
I think NewGuyMA might be onto something with that escalator though... I guess I just didn't see the point in an extra stiff rope. But I'm open to learning about the benefits! I'm fairly new to SRT, just started incorporating it into my work climbing this year. One little piece at a time! Rock climbing and mountaineering background, no caving...a little claustrophobic! :)

speaking of climbing line

Does anyone else notice how the hitchhiker makes yr line kind of an oval shape. I climb mostly srt. W/ HH..
Ok. Back on topic, other that what i have just stated. I really like the poison ive line. Works great for srt. Ive also used lava line only for drt ad some srt access only. IMO it has a lot of stretch.
