Cold bar oil

I seen a crew the other day that hung his bar oil jug in front of the radiator on his chiper with a snap tied to a rope. Our wood chuck self feed chippers blow air out thru radiator instead of pulling air in. The heat from the radiator kept his oil warmer and easier to pour throught the day.

You can also add a little diesel and get the same effect with out having to wait for it to thaw out.............Wade

It's been cold enough for long enough that even the winter weight bar oil was flowing like molasses the other day.

then theres always theold idle u saw for about 5 min .. trick..

Tony, do you have any problems with broken oil pumps during those 5 minutes? Some members have
mentioned that gears get stripped from trying to pump oil that is too thick. The new saws
don't pump oil when at idle, but the older saws do. They would be trying to pump thick oil for
the first 5 mins.

I've never wrecked a pump trying to make it shove cold oil out onto the bar, but i have screwed up chains and turned bars blue...

In my area, and I suppose anywhere that the weather gets pretty cold you can get winter and summer bar oil. Summer oil is almost like STP, winter oil is more like tranny fluid or hydraulic oil with a little tacky goo in it. All I ever use now is the winter grade, mostly because it is a little cheaper. No problems with it.

I never substitute drain oil, 10W/40, or Mazola for bar oil. A long time ago, I used drain oil. Bad choice. It's pretty easy to find bar oil around here for $3 a gallon, even less if you keep your eyes open. Pretty hard to beat that price with anything else.

its cause they live in a lot colder place than myself..it possible i mite use synhetic
in thos temps.., the oil out my kohler and cars an autos is not visibly that dirty .. as i change when it starts looking off color from original..
do u guys living in exstreme cold really have oil ,,darn near get solid on u..
