Anyone use any diesel fuel additives to help w/ the cold weather starts? Temps are below 10 degrees here the last few weeks in the a.m. & chippers have been tough to start.

Inline coolant heaters help out a lot if your close to power.if it weren't for one in each diesel on the farm here nothing would start.

Woops, pulled the battery - which side is positive vs. negative? Thanks!

Maybe peel back some of that black plastic and look for red or black. Red is positive and black is negative. A block heater is just a little heating element like the one in you home hot water heater just smaller. It could be installed in the oil pan or in the water jacket and it plugs into a 120v cord. Does the engine have glow plugs? BTW, I don't have any knowledge on your chipper, just basic mechanics in general. Being from the north, almost all diesels have glow plugs at a minimum and block heater on top of that.

I use a Amsoil diesel injector clean. Run in my common rail deere in my chipper and all my mechanical injection diesels.
Most of your newer equipment does not need a fuel additive for they are designed to run ULSD. But older mechanical injection system need an additive as the sulfur content of the fuel would help to lubricate the injector and the fuel side of the injection pump. Check it out if you like

I like using Stanadyne performance formula in all of my diesel engines year round. Stanadyne also makes a winter 1000 product that looks like it helps with gelling and other Cold weather issues. haven't used the 1000 formula here in Texas it doesn't get cold enough. http://www.stanadyne.com

If you dont have a block heater, you can do this.

You can buy universal heaters that you stick down in your engine oil through the dip stick tube.

Just get a magnetic one. You can slap it on anything flat. Get one above 200 watts I've got a 200w on everything one for grinder, one for grapple truck hydraulic tank and I even put one on my bucket truck hydraulic tank...

Find the numbers off the motor and call your local dealer...they can get you a block heater.run about $75.
