Anyone out there ever try to add color to chips without jumping in and buying a lot of expensive equipment? If I had a big market and it were profitable I might be persuaded to invest in some costly equipment and do it up right. I'm not there yet, however.

I once heard about a guy who bought an old cement truck for $500 and made a ton of money by buying chips, adding color and reselling the bagged chips to stores. Maybe there's a lot more to it than I've been told.

I prefer to buy equipment out of profits rather that to speculate and get in debt by adding equipment to make a product that I'm not sure I can even sell.

Are there ways of doing/trying this cheaply? I'm just tired of just giving the chips away if there are profits to be made. I have access to a finishing tub grinder but there's no point in making really nice looking chips that I end up giving away. Maybe adding color will make the difference.

Thanking you all in advance,
Dennis

a trommel screen would be nice. set it so all the chips are about the same size. rotochopper has a color maching. last I looked it was like 40K, another 30K for the bagger if you wanted it
too rich for something I just dump over the hill anyway

I'm able to sell chips straight out of the chipper.

Those rotochop set-ups look cool but for the investment you need to be moving thousands of yards of material, not just as a side gig.

Very seldom will a side-gig help you get rich quick.

why do you add color? wouldnt the chips be better for the earth if they were NOT soaked in chemical color additives?

just wondering...

Ralph,

Just think how pretty that hillside would look with multi colored chips. :)

The question I have is, how long will this colored mulch fad last ??? Before it gets totally overdone and something new comes along.

I am not the expert on colored mulch but I think the dye used is organic base, similar to food coloring. Personally I can't stand the sight of those colored mulches, especially the red, too hard on the eyes and just does not look natural for an outdoor landscape.

LMAO
the local high school has a nice hillside that I'd like to dump over. their colors are black and orange. maybe if.....nahh!

red is big here right now, well, last few years. ok, every since the bucks won their game, football I think.

imo, once you see how nice some good colored mulch can set off a place..well, I just don't think we'll be seeing the end of colored mulches anytime soon. hope to be proven wrong though..
