After I sharpened my 18463rd. chain I said enough I can't take it anymore. I don't mind sharpening a saw that I dulled, but when I have to sharpen saws others crew members dull, really gets to me.
The same thing happened to me with the old style stump grinder teeth, you know the ones you had to gauge, 1/4" square shaft. I got so sick of changing them I quit taking on stump grinding jobs. Finally broke down and bought the yellow jackets, the pain went away.

I don't know i'm pretty fast with a hand file. l like a sharp saw. Power grinders don't seem to get a really good edge. Lots of time they heat up the metal to much either losing temper or harding it to much. They seem to take off two much metal.
I'll hit a chain with my hand file 5 or so times, then use a jig with a stop to keep it cutting streight. I see lots of chains that someone was stronger on one side then the other, or maybe there only doing one side, but that chain will cut a bowl not streight. I only use those power grinders if the chain was really thrashed. Then i'll hit it with a file to diel it in.

I bought a oregan 511a and never use it. Still use hand files always seems to get them screaming I have an orange tube I got from tree stuff with three different sizes in each truck. I never even put a handle on the file I just wear gloves and it never bothered me.

^ Thanks Knobby. I figure you get what you pay for and I need something that will work well for a long time. My grinder is great for a home owner, but with over a hundred loops through it it hasn't held up I don't think. I use the same process every time, and it has become inconsistent. Also, I set it up for one side, turn it and the other side seems way different. Either too deep, or not hitting. It used to sharpen very well every time.

So the Oregon 511 should serve well? I called my local Stihl dealer and I"m sure its a great unit but it was $604 plus tax. If it's absolutely worth double I'd consider it, but if the Oregon at least comes close I may go with it.

Ill sell you one like new never use the damn thing maybe did 20 chains on it. I always sharpen them as soon as they get dull at work. Been sitting on my bench for two years.
