Yesterday I found myself debating with some clown about horsepower. He argued that diesel engine horsepower is greater than gasoline engine horsepower.

Well, he was right, in a simple minded sort of way.

The performance of a diesel Engine of 300hp is compareable to a gas engine of 5-600hp (just throwing numbers out) because the diesel engine's torque is so much higher (in most cases).

I have a Ford Powerstroke making about 300hp to the rear wheels and I have a Dodge 360 gasser making about 300hp to the rear wheels. Now the Dodge's engine is nothing to scoff at, but it'll never compare to the 'stroke.

i'm sorry to hear that.........maybe next time you'll buy the cummins. :p

there was a ton of ford / cummins rumors going around a few years ago......like ford owned cummins blah blah......

i will start to keep a close eye though as 2007 gets closer though. 2007 is the end of the contract with cummins and dodge. i'm sure they will just renew since dodge/ freightliner must use alot of cummins engine's.

what does ford mainly use in their medium duty trucks? gmc use's cat what about ford?

I just got done reading some on Cummins they say ford doesn't own any part of cummins anymore.

Ford uses international mainly but also offers a cat engine.

As far as being sorry about my 'stroke, I'm not. The truck has 262,000mi on it and still makes more power than any new diesel pickup you can buy (my engine has some power upgrades). This engine has never had the heads off, nor has the engine been pulled. The turbo is original, it has needed one water pump, some glowplugs, and I replaced the injectors at about 200,000mi to get some larger ones. I also have replaced a few small o-rings and gaskets but nothing major. Beyond that, it has really just had maintanance. I love my truck. Attached is a recent picture of my truck hooked to a 6 horse trailer with two large tack rooms. Pulled it loaded like it wasn't back there. -Phillip

Please describe what your definition of horsepower is my friend.

Easy there "self proclaimed genus." Yea, I know the two horsepower ratings are of the same definition. That's why he was right "in a simple minded way" but not "technically right."

clean looking truck for that many miles.........but you have the 7.8 unlike the new recalled 6.0 getting 12 miles to the gallon. i'm only at 241,000 on my 97 dodge. i've had some performace up grade's like cold air kit, 4in exhaust and cam plate in pump. i've had to replace 2 starters and a throttle linkage but other than that eveything on the moter is origional.

on some of the new trucks they offer 300hp diesels. that why ford put that 6.0 out before it was ready bugs and all to compete in the hp war a few years ago. i'm pretty sure theres a 350hp cummins/dodge available , but it's only sold in certain state's. i haven't been on the turbo diesel register forum in a while.

But describe in your own words what horsepower is. (and it's genius).

Well I have 33k on my 03 cummins, but the good news is its hasn't blown up yet ;) I had told myself I wouldn't own a diesel but after test driving it I was sold.

I believe the Cummins ISB 5.9 is available in a Ford, right now. In the F-650. :)

thats very well possible........our 2 gmc 7500's have cats but our 4500 has the duramax......now a 2500 or 3500 with a cat would be sweet. on the med duty trucks you can sometimes spec a few engine options. when i was looking at new internationals they had high output diesels that were only available in emergency vehicles.
