What is agood way to tell with out a test gauge that your saw is low on compression?

I can't give you a good answer, but you can buy a compression tester at your local Auto Zone - Pep Boys - Advance Auto pretty cheap. It's a handy item to have. Matt

There really isn't a good way to tell with out a guage. If you ran the saw when it had good compression, you can compare how the rope pulls now to how it used to pull. Also, if the saw is down on power and smokes more than it used to using the same mix ratio, you can guess compression is low. Without a guage you won't know for sure.

You can pick up cheap compression guage at the autoparts store or one of the online tool places for not much money. They are not the most accurate, but they will at least ball park it for you.

I heard that you can kinda get a feel for it by holding it by the pull rope and seeing if the weight of the saw will turn it over. If it will, then it isn't a good sign.

Actually that is close but it depends on if the bar and chain are on it and if so the size of the bar, even with decent compression it will turn over,, ii is not an exact science for a newbie,,,, Pick it up by the pull rope,,, it will turn over but it should do so slowly,,, without the B/C,,,, it should hang on the pull rope a bit longer if you cannot pick it up off of the ground or if you can and it falls quickly, just politely thank them for showing it to you and walk away :)
