I just got this off e-bay. It's a Granberg "guide vise". It sure is heavy compared to the guides out today. I like the clamp. It clamps the drivers for a really solid grip. It came mounted with a file for square chain. Can I file square chain with this guide?
Scott

Scott, the chisel file is not at the right angle, the way it sits in the guide. If the file can be turned and fits in the slots it will work, other wise you'll have to adapt it to fit. Your still limited to only one angle it gives your file. Take another picture if it works.

now that is an real interesting contraption...looks like something that mite have been made in the usa..back when things were made in the usa..
i know id like to have it.. with a little instruction on set up ,im betting i could rough in an square fileing,, pretty decent..then o course,, put my skilled final hand filing touch, toit..:D

I haven't changed any of the angles, or moved the file. I'll have to figure out if it can be set to properly get into the corner of the tooth at the right angles. I'm glad all the parts are still tight, very little play in the sliding parts. I still don't feel competant to hand file my chains. I still use my cheap oregon guide for my sharpening. I don't know how you guys can keep each tooth the same.

To MaC.

As I've said before, I'm not an expert filler, not do I pretend to be. But the ansure to filling is Practice, Practice and more Practice. Along with lots of Patience. Take care. Lewis.

I made a chain holder that works well with round filing. This vice can't accomodate the downward angle that square filng requires. In the limited experimentation on square filing that I have done the only way to use this file is one tooth at a time on the extreme left/right sides. I can get the clearence I need there.

Hi RAHTREELIMBS,

I noticed in the background of your picture you have a PFERD
Chain Sharp dual filer.

- How do you like it ?

- Do you use it regularly ?

- Pros & cons you have found ?

Many thanks

Mostly they have been collecting dust in recent years. They are alright with one exception. On the smaller file sizes (5/32 & 3/16) care must be taken not to push to hard. In doing so the file will bow and cause the 2 outer guide rails to ride down on the cutter and take too much metal off of the depth gauge. I used them for a while when they first came out at a time when I was new to filing. I freehand all my filing now. Since Tony has been trying to get the square filing down maybe I will have to give it a whirl!:D

Filing jig

I built this jig out of aluminum and stainless using a recirculating bearing and a rod from an air cylinder from old packaging machinery. I liked the idea of barmount jigs but found them to be too flimsy. It is a copy of a Stihl jig I saw on Ebay.

What about this latest version from Stihl
