What are you guys coming up with as far as cost of maintenance on your chippers.Been renting a 6" chipper for jobs and just trying to decide whether or not tojust purchase one .trying to compare rental costs to owning and maintaining one .

When you rent, you pay their costs of ownership, plus cost of insurance ( renters rate) plus repairs, plus a nice profit for the rental company. Their maintenance costs are probably higher than yours would be, because so many renters abuse equipment in ways you would never believe.
Unless you only rent a few times a year, it is usually cheaper to own.

It costs me $130\ day to rent a 6"and you dont even have to fill the gas tank back up.I definitely rent more than a few times per year but I don't use a chipper everyday

Must be something like a Vermeer 625. I think those are only rated at 3 or 4 BP. A chipper like a BC 1000 or a Bandit 95 are more like 40 to 50 BP. You can run a 625 all day on a couple gallons of gas. Of course, it takes 1/2 day to fill a pickup bed with chips. One of the other chippers will fill a pickup bed in 15 minutes if you have the ability to feed brush that fast.
They say the BC1000 is a 12" chipper, and it will accept a 12" log, but it don't like it. It is happy cutting 8 or 9" stuff all day long. I hear the Bandit is a little better, but no personal experience.
If the 625 is doing the job for you, than keep renting. When you need more chipper......by good used one and put it to work.

pick up drum style chuck and duck for 3 grand, every easy maintenance, you ll look back and say wow I cant believe i use to ... rent a chipper
I rented one of those 6 inch deals , when my chipper was down...
