Here is the deal.
There is an old lime tree standing in my fathers farm, and recently we've noticed that it's cracking pretty badlly. (at point A) So, after a bit of thinking, we've decided to cut off a brach (marked red) in order to shed some weight and stop further cracking.
My plan was to anchor myself at the top (point C), rapel and connect myself near point B with a lanyard, and then procced to remove the branch (marked red). This would allow me to retreat to the main trunk if anything went wrong and it wouldn't put my own weight on the branch that is cracking.
I would really like to hear some opinions and advice both about what to do to stop the cracking and advice on how to remove the (marked red) branch.

Leave the crown alone, support the split with proper bracing & cabling. Weight reduction should not be done with large upper leader cuts. Selective tipping & thinning cuts should be used. Post a pic of the crack so we can better understand the issue.

Better to make 20 small cuts than one big one, but your plan may work. Cannot prescribe without seeing defect.

The potential split does not look bad from here!
