Hey everyone,
I have a Craftsman that I'm reading is really a Poulan 3700 or 3800. 60cc 20" bar. Its a great saw, been in the family for 30 years. I'll start with I'm a motorcycle mechanic so I have the basic understanding. When I got the saw it was hard to start. Pulled the carb apart, threw it in the ultra sonic cleaner and put it back together. I can't seem to find a carb rebuild kit so its still the original 30yo parts. Replaced the air filter, spark plug, bar, chain and basically took most of it apart and just cleaned it up and checked it out. Tuned the carb, had tan plugs. For awhile the saw ran fine. Now when it runs out of gas it just won't start. I can get it to start cold without much problem. Since I've already been through fuel I'm starting to think its spark. Some kind of thermal issue. The problem is no one seems to have a replacement ignition module. Well one guy on eBay and he wants $70. So that gets me to my real question.
Does anyone know where to get a carb rebuild kit or an ignition module for this thing for a reasonable price. I'm guessing the saws worth about $150 and I can buy something good enough modern for $200. The cylinder does have some major scoring. I've been meaning to do a leak down test. But it does run fine when it runs. I'd really rather save this saw but if I can't get parts

My loudest is my little old Homelite XL-12. My best sounding is the Shindaiwa 757.

Just find the model numbers on the carb, kits are readily available. Is it a Walbro hdc? Put up the numbers off of the carb, so you can get the correct circuit plate gasket.

It says Walbro hdb and plugging that into google brought up many kits, thank you. Honestly though I'm more interested in the ignition module. Part# 530039093
With the tan plugs and starting when cold but not hot makes me think spark. Either that or vapor lock but I doubt it since it will run the tank empty. It just won't start after I refuel it unless I let it sit for a while.

Try posting in the swap and trade forum, a lot of ppl have these saws and parts for them

Possibly a stupid question but, did u check spark? Can't imagine it would be that if it ran fine before it ran out of gas

I have that exact same model Craftsman/Poulan.

Low comp may be the hot start problem. Check it.
The coils seem to be bullet proof on them.

The cylinders are bare aluminum on them. Crome plated piston.

Clean too, did u re-paint?

That's the same saw I have, except mine has a poulan 3800 recoil. I have been wanting the correct recoil, but have yet to find someone who wants to swap with me. I love the saw. Great power for its size. It is my go to saw for the big stuff.

I get it, I'd have every extra part I could get my hands on for my 3.7 if I had the money.

Look at the piston through the exhaust, and also look at the piston through the intake when you put a new kit in it, It may have some serious dirt ingestion damage...
Yes, the cylinder has scoring. When I 1st got the saw there was duct tape covering a hole in the air filter. I had the saw mostly disassembled when I got it just to clean it up.

I did a comp test but my comp tester is the old style rubber tip jammed in the spark plug hole. I was getting around 70 but it wasn't easy holding the gauge in the hole while trying to pull start it so I don't know how accurate it is. I have a good leak down tester and I'd assume its the typical 20% leakage limit I just haven't got around to it. If thats the problem then this saw is probably going to get retired. Machining cost and the availability of oversized piston and rings. I'm in the middle of rebuilding the engine on my 77 f150 so I'm going to have to pause this project for a little bit.

Thanks for the help everyone

Hello everyone,
I have the same saw and I'm trying to find the correct ignition coil.
So far I've ordered 2 online, and both were incorrect (the problem is with the angle/triangle/beveled end.... top right of each coil in pic), and the latest one had a too short spark plug wire.
Original is on top in pic.
