My neighbor who is 76 years old asked me to see if i could get his old saws running. 2 McCullough's and one craftsman. Got both the McCullough's running with some carb work. Got the craftsman to run fine but it just dumps bar oil all the time, whether its running or not, seems worst at idle. I know some saws have an oil adjusment but i can't find it on this one. From what i can find on the net it seems to be a fairly common problem with these saws but i didnt see a solution. Anyone have experience with these saws/problem? It just says 20" 46cc craftsman on the side. Thanks!

Model 358.350202 from 2003. There is no clear tube in or around the oil tank that i can see. There is a black tube with a metal piece that looks like a small spring on one end inside the resevoir. I know its a probably a pretty low end saw, i just told him i would try to determine if it was worth anything at all or he should toss it.

The oil is coming out of where it should be its just way to much. With the side cover off you can watch it run out of the chain oiler hole. Its a constant stream that never stops until the resevoir is empty.

I will search for anything i can find on that poulan model, Thank you!

I will tear into this weekend and see what the oil gear looks like, if there is minimal costs, i will fix it. It has 128lbs of compression so it should run a little while longer. Kinda scares me when a saw says 125 hours run time!!

I just showed my neighbor that they were all running and tried to give the 2 mcculloughs back. I told him the craftsman needs some more work and might not be fixable. He told me to keep them all or i could sell them if i wanted. He said he doesnt want anything that big anymore and if i dont want them to sell them. Seems my collection is growing, and turning colors, it was just orange :)! Thanks for all the help i really do appreciate it.

That could be, I know i would'nt buy a saw that was rated for so few hours. Makes more sense that it would be a epa rating. Thanks!

This case had about 1/4 inch of oil in the bottom when i first opened it. Looking at the saw it has almost no use i would say. From what i can read it seems to be a common problem with these saws. Ill tear it down and see whats wrong inside and hopefully learn something new! Thanks!

My crapsman 42cc saw has done that since it was new. I would put it in the case and next time it got used the case would be full of oil.

Next time you open the oil tank cap look for a clear plastic tube in the corner near the cap. My PP220 leaked and the tube was not in the corner but pulled out toward the center of the tank. I just pushed it back to the corner and it stopped leaking. Some of the IPLs show a oil tank vent kit that is a check valve and bronze filter that is on the flywheel side. My saw just has a plastic dimple in that area.

Several guys on this forum have had good luck with putting a new ring in their aluminum cylinder Poulan.

So i tore the craftsman down yesterday.....the oil gear is not stripped and it looks to be installed correctly. I am somewhat perplexed, everything looks normal other then a little dirt under the oil gear cover. Is there a check valve that is missing from somewhere in the system, or is there an oiler adjustment im not seeing?

I think it's just a life problem with em. I know of another one that does the same thing. mine has done it since new, So if i don't want oil all over the place or in the case i will drain it out each time. It don't get used no more since the MS 250 came home. I know that a stihl or a husky is not for everybody, But in chainsaws the old saying is very true.( Ya get what you pay for).

I am a firm believer in you get what you pay for! I have a 029s, modded ms310 and 192t so i dont need the craftsman. The craftsman was free and its more of a curiousity issue with me. I have a hands on learn by doing kind of mentality and i did enjoy tearing into it. I would prefer to fix it but if i can't its really not a big deal. Thanks!

Keep at it BlownNova! I'm counting on you to fix it so I can then fix mine! I think I have a 2750 (Wildthing) and it leaks more oil than ever gets on the darn chain. In fact, it doesn't really seem like it gets any on the chain. I get lots of oily sawdust under the cover though!

Well ya can't argue with the price.LOL I hope you can fix it somehow, I haven't even tried to fix mine. If you find a cure please post it and i will try and fix mine. Does yours die when it gets hot and won't idle. Mine has done that since new too.If it sets for an hour or so it will fire back up. It's a wonder the thing even runs as many times it's been tossed across the woods. Was gonna take it back and thought i'll break it in first and see if it works better, Never did and i never took it back, My fault. I got it on sale the only reason i bought it. Thought it would do good on small limbs.Wrong. I have replaced the cheap anti vibe springs in it three times. They stretch out really fast.

If i understand the way it works, i can't see how it could work very well. The oil gear is meshed with a gear on the crankshaft and there is no way that it dissengages that i can see. So at idle it would be spinning the gear all the time. I don't see a check valve or anything that slows the flow at idle speed. Unless it takes a certain rpm to actually start drawing oil up i would think it would always leak. Is this how it is supposed to be or am i missing something entirely? Only other thing i can see is that the oil seal is not as soft as it could be.
