I used to struggle and curse trying to pull crank seals sometimes, finally after injuring myself I invented a cheap simple tool that pulls most seals in seconds!;)
Go to your hardware store and find a good quality "Carpet cutter knife",that's what I call them. Look for one with a thicker blade for strength. Then grind the end of it to the shape in my crude diagram in the attachment. To use it simply push it down inside the lip of the seal, tap the back of the blade to fully ram it down inside the seal, use care not to scratch or gouge anything. Then just rock the tool back and pop the seal out,it's that quick and easy.View attachment 198563View attachment 198564View attachment 198563View attachment 198564

In the photo of my tool the tip is bent out a bit from use,it should be straight. If the tip is too wide it may be harder to get down inside the seal,if it's too narrow it can break off,but the tool is quick and cheap to make.

Yeah, it was kind of a squeeze to get it behind the seal on my 346XP. A small one like the one you made would have been better.

This tool is one of the best I have used,..I did modify the lip that pushes in under the seal by making it smaller. I picked up a couple of new spare tips to modify as required but so far none have broken. Your homemade tool will work fine and I really like making my own tools also but just letting others know there are alternatives out there. Rep coming your way for making your own tools.

The site here crashed a couple of years ago; many photos were lost. The post you are replying to is from Sep 2011. ;-)

This fellow on ebay from the UK has a decent price for genuine Stihl pullers--about $156 buy it now. Looks like he's sold a lot of them.

i see your point about the big pilot. looks like an easily rednecked tool to make with a smaller pilot and without the $110 charge... :)

And not just the big pilot, but the large dia of the threaded shaft is a problem too as it also blocks the arms from coming in on a small seal I.D.
