I had a friend that used to split small wood like that laying on the ground. He just walked along and swung the ax with one hand. If the wood was laying in a long row from bucking he would take his toe and move every other piece sideways, and move right down the log. Made it look so easy. I tried it for five minutes and went back to standing them up, Joe.

Ya, done that a bunch when using an axe instead of a maul. A variation is have a few sizes of crotches handy to use for the leaner/support piece, lay the round to split in the crotch and it it keeps it more stable for follow up and additional strikes. That way even has an old timey name to it, called using a "school ma'rm"

Nothing special at all. Done it often. When the wood is lying on the ground from cutting up it goes much faster. I have even stood on larger rounds while splitting them. From a physics standpoint it is even smart to do, because your axe/maul has a longer swing time and can acumulate more energy.
