how's it goin'
I bought my 660 about 3 weeks ago and didn't make sure the spark plug was tight. Cutting today, the saw made a POP and shut off. The plug had came out. I noticed it wrecked some of the threads and so I started the plug back in, set it down and went back to work, meaning to fix it when I had a minute. My laborer started it 15 minutes later, and I told him to kill it so I could tighten my earlier plug screwing. I just put the wrench to it and turned. Long story short, I cross threaded my 660's head. Poor girl.
Should I bother with a retap/thread insert- or drill and go over a sixteenth, hundredth, whatever... If I do, what's the next size up from the bosch r 10?

:bang:

The same thing happened to my father today...well, kind of. His saw is 18 years old, has countless cords of wood on it, and didn't cost $1000. His plug backed out and took the threads with it when it popped out - no cross threading involved. Just down the road a piece in Medina!

I'm also with timesert, or better... never seen a helicoil hang in for long on a chainsaw plug... maybe it has to do with the short plugs.

Just wondering about the timeserts what stops them from turning after they are installed? I asked around and nobody I talked to locally had heard about them. Thanks for posting the link. I assume it is a threaded plug but does it have a step on the top? Is there a proceedure on that site. I like the idea and wish to get more informed.

Yeah, Huskydave, they use a seat cutter to cut a top seat for the flange on the insert and the bottom is "cold rolled" into the threads of the material so that it locks in place.

So, I ordered the time-sert model #4412 ($148.13) from Time Fastener company in nevada by UPS Ground($10) and two model #44125 inserts ($2.50ea). Cost about $162.00, but got great reviews. I hope it's worth the money. I'll let you guys know what happens. Thank you, Tzed.

Could have bought a new 660 cylinder for that kind of cash. If you would, please post a step-by-step, with pictures, in this thread when you repair the cylinder!

You could have bought a taiwan or chinese copy for that price, but not a new stihl..

You are welcome! I have always had really good luck with Time-serts.

Happy Sawing!
