  • Based on what I learned on this forum, I think the Echos and Dolmars will be superior to the Huskies and Stihls in the same price range (~$300)
  • While the Dolmar dealer will no longer carry their products, there is a local small engine repair shop with a good reputation. May be able to service the saw in a pinch.

The 490 and 590 both have very good reviews. The 590 is a beast but it is a little heavy. If you get into bigger wood, that might be a good choice but the 490 will be fine too and a little less tiring to use. As far as tuning, your dealer can remove the limiter caps and re-tune if necessary. No experience with Dolmar but guys really like them. For your purposes, any will give you reliable service with just general maintenance.

One of the best things you can do is run good ethanol-free gas and quality oil mix. These saws will give you many years of trouble-free service. Parts can be gotten anywhere and many guys in these forums can be of great help. My oldest saw is probably 12 yrs. old. The only maintenance I've had to do is cleaning, sharpening and replace a plastic clutch cover. About $30 in parts.

CS-590. Price and 5 year warranty.
A 6421 more power and a cutting machine capable of longer bars if necessary.
Dependability and warranty go Echo. Make sure it is from a servicing Dealer that knows chainsaws.
