Well I broke down today and took my old Craftsman/Poulan in to the saw shop. I spent 4 hours the other night, tore it down, ( using the info. I downloaded with help from Scott) everything seemed right but it still would not oil. The Mrs. said she had not heard cussing like that in quite some time!
My repair guy is the local Stihl dealer, and yes I took some ribbing for bringing in my " boy scout " saw. They suggested a new mini-boss, and I could toss my old saw in the dumpster no charge! What are friends for! I will keep you all posted on the mystery of no oil.:dizzy:

Hey if he can't fix it at least you won't feel bad! Keep us in the loop. I have had many nights of cursing especially working on snowmobiles. I was always fixing someones sled and always bent over for hours and hours and had some real hard times beer helps and whiskey is even better!

What did the oil filter look like ?

My Poulan slings oil all over everything.

I assume you did the obvious like check the hole and filter?

Oil filter was fine, its just a simple foam circle. There is a metering gizmo it slides into, and that had good pressure and returned the way it should. I took out the oil line, it was clear. ( getting it back in was a treat ) Of course I cleaned the bar and all the other basics. I can't wait to hear what the shop says, because it starts right up and runs strong. I'm starting to wonder if there is a crack internally thats affecting the crankcase pressure. I do remember that I paid $120.00 18 years ago for it, so I guess I got my moneys worth!

I would think that a internal crack would let bar oil to be sucked into the crankcase and cause a lot of smoke while running . In your trouble shooting did you check the oil cap for pressure after you ran the saw ? Two other items that I see on the IPL are the oil tank valve and the oil tank pin (items 6 and 3) . You need to remove the clutch to remove the check valve .
