I don't remember who gave me this idea, but I know it was from the cutting ropes thread a while back. I have started cutting my ropes with an old soldering iron and I have to say it REALLY works well. No worrying about the tape coming undone, or the whipping. Just heat up the iron, make the cut and that's all she wrote. So whoever gave me that idea, thank you. :)

another method similar to a hot knife is to take a hacksaw blade, bend it into a large U with a flat bottom and hook it up to you welder, being sure to insulate the two ends so you don't get poofy hair. Then use it like a hot knife. I tried the soldering iron, but mine won't cut it on a 3/4' line. (pun intended)

a nice tool to have is a butane torch, the little ones the size of a lighter. you can buy a good one for 40$ but they're often available at smoke shops for 5-10$ and melt rope like no one's business.

Rope cutting

I've always got a sharp chisel in the tool kit. Rope laid on a solid piece of wood and one whack with the hammer, very clean cut. I use a piezo-start propane torch to melt the cut end in several seconds. -TM-
