I bought it (ps-401) from a dealer who did not set it up or ever run it, but it was the only dealer around that had one so I had got it anyway. I like the saw,it's just so damed tempermantal to get going. Pull it 4-5 times to get it to light off with choke on, then another 10 times with some starts that jus die back out. When I do get it lit you gota feather the throttle to get it to open up. Any tips on what I could do to make it start better?

You're probably flooding it. I did with my 5100. I was told to choke it, pull the rope once slowly, the take the choke off and pull it again.

Richen Low Speed jets beyond limiter caps. And it will start better and not be a doggy

Yup... you're flooding it... Like Rob said... come off the choke earlier.

Gary

To be clear I currently choke till it blubbles once, turn it off and then pull 3 or 27 times... I dont let it try to run on choke..Should I net wait for the thing to gurgle on the choke and just pull once regardless and then turn it off? My 028 needs 3 pulls max, one to make the choke burble, then off with the choke and it starts in 1 or 2 pulls.

I wish my 401 would do that.

I am gona go try the choke thing out... Be rightback.

+1

Mine started easier and ran better after removing the caps and adjusting as per AS rules of membership demand. Before the adjustment, I was not happy with the happy start saw!:censored:

I have also done that with the 5100, the switch "lured" me - I though I put it to "high Idle", but really had turned it off, and continued pulling - my fault entirely......

Well by now he's obviously flooded it again. Or maybe it fired up and he's cutting cookies!

I think he probably threw the thing and is picking up the pieces or else he is paging through the phonebook looking for his local dolmar dealer. j/k

Dang, 2 hours? He musta got sidetracked. Hoosier, stop looking at pron and get back to the saw! Hoosier daddy?

When I got my blue 111i it took me a while to figure out how to start it without flooding. It doesn't have a choke but an injector. At first I was partially setting the throttle and it flooded every time. I did that about 3 times total until I got the proper technique down. All I need to do with this saw is pull out the injector switch, throttle at idle setting and and pull the starter once. If I'm fast enough to disengage the injector it stays started but more often than than not, I will have to disengage the injector after the first pull and crank it once or twice more and it idles on.
Although this saw is new and probably not yet fully broken in, it is about a 1996 vintage saw. I'd like to have a ps-401. I hear that they are pretty good little saws.

Ooops.... I got sidetracked with a customer call...

Anyway, I did try it out and did not see much difference in the dificulty in starting. I choked it for one pull and then turned off the choke and got no where, after several pulls. I had to choke it untill it tried to fire, then disable the choke for another 5 or 6 pulls till it would stay running for any length of time. I have to think the low speed setting is out a whak or somthing. Any ideas?

Typically when I start a saw with a choke I engage the choke fully and once it kicks a little I back the choke off about half way then try it again. Often I will have to engage the throttle part way until started. Basic stuff. I guess you have tried all that though.

I'll throw in some cents. here as we have sold a few 401s.

First....FRESH fuel. 89 octane or higher of course.

Get is started, pull the limiter caps and readjust the low end a tiny bit on the rich side. Then adjust the top end with a tach and a little ear-technology (get help if you cannot do this), re-check the low end.

After this....Pull the choke to full and set the high idle on the throttle. Pull 2-3 time or till it coughs (usually 1-3 pulls). Put choke to OFF. Re-pull (1-3) times till it runs, allow to run at idle for about 5 seconds to make sure you are well lubed before burping the throttle. The biggest problem is that your dealer didn't set the saw up and make sure it was adjusted A-OK.

After 5-10 tanks of fuel you MAY need a little more tweaking to get 100% out of the saw.

Or......Send the saw to Dave Neiger (sp) and wait for it to come back....yumm.
