Dawn Redwood root flare?

So what are your thoughts on the updated pics? Do you think I left it at a good enough spot to leave it?

Truth?
It looks like a telephone pole stuck in the ground.

Without seeing what the base of the tree/entire root system looked like before planting, it's impossible to say accurately whether, or not it was planted correctly, or if it will survive.

I still have a strong suspicion that the roots you removed may have been the only viable roots on the tree.

Can you take a photo of the entire tree, so we can see what the top looks like?

It definately has more roots. I pushed on the tree and it does not really move. You can see the start of the actual flare in the last pics I posted. I did not go anymore since I was starting to hit more roots and not sure if it is worth going any deeper.

I hope I am wrong about the roots and that the tree thrives and you get many years of enjoyment from it.

I sure hope so. It has been quite the battle just trying to get a nice tree for the yard!

Here are a few more pics trying to get a better angle. Lighting is not good since it is on the shaded side.

This pic you can see the beginning of the flare on right side. There is also the start of a flare right in the middle but can't see in this angle.


This is another angle of that side. Here you can see the beginning of the flare in 2 spots.


And this is the opposite side. I did not go down quite as far. You can see quite a few roots here.
Left side of tree you can see the start of the flare. Right side has a rather large root that I'm not going to remove.

My thoughts on it are to let the tree get more established and then maybe take some of those out next fall or something.
I'm no expert by any means. So maybe my thought process on this is completely wrong.

Generally speaking, girdling roots are a multi year problem... planted too deep and left for years... I would just follow normal maintenance practices and check it spring and fall
