We planted a blue spruce in November of 2006. We live in North Central Arizona. The tree looked great and was doing well, until the day before yesterday, October, 4th, 2007. It was turning brown and the needles started to fall off, but the ends of the branches were still green. We put a plant food and continued to water as usual.
We noticed that near the ends of the branches there was a blackening and then, almost overnight, the tree turned totally brown and is very dead.
We would like to know what killed it and it there something that we can do so that it does not spread to the Austrian pine and the other spruce.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

PS. For those that might not know, the climate here is hot (90's - low 100's)in the summers but can get down to the 20's in the evening in the winter with the days in the 50's and 60's. It's dry!!

If there is a lot of black soot on it. Then it could possibly be a sooty mold which is a result usually of a tortoise scale.

I don't know if it was sooty, just black, like someone painted it.
Unfortunately, now that it's dead, it is all brown with no evidence of anything that happened to it, but I'll talke a picture of it anyway and send it.
