Well you're the walking encyclopedia of stihl stuff.

Here's the Service Update from when Stihl went to the "Optimized" cylinder and piston for both 044 and 046. I believe this is the point where the D-shaped combustion chamber cylinder for 046 went away.
Amazingly enough, Stihl rated the newer cylinder and piston as having more power.
Thanks for the info. Based on what I've gleaned, I'm gonna be on the lookout for an 046. I'm gonna wait for a "you suck" deal though.
Might be an 048 piston, or 272, 281, 045 with the 52mm top end, and there are more but I can't think of them.i have what i thought to be 046 piston here
looks to be 3/16ish pin height diff?
skirt length bout same

Yes, the 3 leg 1309 coil was the performance onesDifferent ( better) coil on some early coils

Could you post up a pic?
The 1309 coil on the 088 is different than the 1309 coil on the 046. Curvature of the laminates on the 088 coil sweeps more because the 088 flywheel is much larger.Yes, the 3 leg 1309 coil was the performance ones
also used on the 088
Jacob, what about the 1309 coil for 066mags?The 1309 coil on the 088 is different than the 1309 coil on the 046. Curvature of the laminates on the 088 coil sweeps more because the 088 flywheel is much larger.
