I have a small Honda 8hp engine and endless small branches that need chipping. Without wanting to get bogged down in the mathematics of wood chipping as can be found on the internet, I was hoping someone might have a basic formula or design up their sleeve for calculating the disc diameter, number of blades, gearing or pulley ratio etc to help me build my own a 'domestic' wood chipper.

Jesus. That's the guy you want to talk to, only He can perform the miracle yer looking for. Other than that the only thing you can do is just keep the blade sharp and yer schedule clear.

I used a hole saw to drill through the top of an old lawn mower once upon a time. Turned it into a corn stalk chopper, and it would self feed sort of. I also used my walk behind snow blower to get the pile of wood chips tp point B. Worked ok, but both machines aren't running too good now for some reason.

If you have a saw, it's probably faster to just keep cutting the branches smaller and smaller until it's just one big pile of sawdust.

Seriously though, rent a chipper for a day or a weekend. Or just contract someone to come and chip the pile for you.

This guy is right just rent a chipper. And 8hp is not gonna do the job. They use bigger motors on log splitters.

Ok, I've got the hint! Thank you everyone for your entertaining thoughts. But let's not forget life on this side of the pond exists on a far smaller scale when it comes to horsepower!

there exist home owner chippers that are in the range of 8-10 hp. for raking your yard and for larger properties, it wouldn't be a bad idea, but the thought of building an entire chipper because I have a $300 motor sitting around is mind numbing.

heres and example of an 8hp chipper.
3 1/2 Salsco model 608 wood chipper

its 2500 bucks. buy or rent one instead, and use the 8hp motor for a wood splitter or a go-kart.

Take the brush and make a pyramid or tiepie out of it w/ the chipper in the middle. Then wash in gas and rinse with flame. Very efficient and fast.
