Dad and I drove up north yesterday to pick up my DN660. We are very impressed with the results. Worth every penny! Tested it in a round of frozen 18" oak when we got home.(now that's some hard wood) The rpm's stayed right up there along with the torque. Currently using a 24" bar with full skip chain but I think a full chisel on a bar this size would make it cut even faster. It was like being a kid at Christmas all over again:D

Mike I did not time any cuts before I had it modded. I wish I would have. If we ever get out of the deep freeze here in Michigan, I want to get some videos/timed cuts in fresh oak. There won't be anyway to tell the difference in gains time wise now but I know from running it pre-mod it runs a heck of a stronger.

A stock 660 with a 24" full skip would hardly know the wood was there. A modded 660, well, did you hear the saw yawn?

I wish there was more objective information on the diff between saws before and after porting and such. Timings in bigger wood (24+inch wood, not estimated, but on the tape) probably as good as any.

I know they are stronger, but I really wonder how much. It's a well document fact that humans equate more sound with more power.

Kids put louder motorcyle exhausts on all the time (street bikes) and rave about how how much faster the bike is. The clock doesn't lie, and it generally says no.

Seat of the pants impressions in small wood may or may not apply to actual timings in big wood...Just wondering...

I can say this, I have ran some others modded 066's and they didnt cut much faster then stock, dogs IMO. I have also ran some very good modded 066's and those things smoked the stock and other modded 066's in timed cuts. Thats as far as i am going with it. Choose your modders wisely.
Got the 32" b+c on my 066 right now and going to go play.

I would think that if it was done by DN the he did it right. HE does a great job with modding saws. I got a 962 olympiyk that he didd that is amazing compared to stock. It would have been interesting to get some times.

As far as the sound goes, it isn't any louder. The muffler was modded the second day after I bought it brand new last summer. It has a slightly different pitch now when it is wide open in the cut. I've cut with it long enough to know it runs much better. A sharp chain does wonders also. I may even buy a square grind chain to start learning challenging art of hand square filing. I hand file all my chains now without any trouble but I know the square is much harder to file.

As far as the builder goes, he is damned good at what he does and the same goes for his personality. I highly recommend him. He stands behind his work. Got to spend about 3+ hrs. talking to him in person which I enjoyed instead of just boxing it up and waiting to get it back. See you at Luther days, Dave.

Dn540

I got a decent deal on a 540 and must admit I was a little dissapointed. I thought it would be a torky mid rpm saw. Stock it was not a whole lot more than my muffler modded 401. Not that is was bad, I just expected it to run similar to a 290. After sending it to Dave it was within 10%, on timed cuts, of a friends muffler modded 034. Now with more time on it and 3/8's chain it would be close. The thing I like most about what he did was that I have more rpm, more torque, but is not peaky or high strung.

At a recent GTG, Caseyforrest's DN361 ran similar or faster times in big hickory that some muffler modded 7900's.

Dave is a good man that does good work.

Well said, I can't mention Big Dave without my post being pulled or the whole thread coming up missing. So I am glad others notice DN does quality work.
