I have a homelite 33cc saw and I pulled the muffler, removed the screen and pryed the exterior sheetmetal baffle out an eigth of an inch. The saw does not sound like the video posted on here, it is still high pitched similar to stock. Will wood chips or dust be sucked in since I do not have a spark arrestor screen??? I guess that is my major question, it seems to have already responed by just the prying of the and removing the screen. I am a homeowner and don't cut except on my own property. I am not worried about starting a fire, there is an internal baffle that would help with flames but I have run it and seen nothing.
Thanks for your replies to a newbie.

no, chips and such wouldnt get sucked in even if it had hole big enough to put your fist into... The only reason for spark arrestor is to prevent sparks from getting out but not a single european saw has one...

Couple of things here
First you dont need the spark arrestor but you are so much better off with it.
It does help from getting dirt and saw dirt from sucked back into the engine although its not like running without an air filter. Any dust or dirt that gets into the piston can score it. Also the spark arrestor does prevent small sparks from possibly igniting the dry woods. They are required to cut on any state or federal land.
Secondly when you opened up the muffler, did you readjust the carb settings? muffler mods can make a saw run lean and possibly hurt itself.
do a search for muffler mods on here, most of them discuss adjusting the carb. It's safe insurance and also increases the performance gained from the muffler mod.

Out here they are is required on forest service land and also in some cities.
I leave mine in, they do not affect performance materially, and they do stop junk getting inside your muffler from the outside when the saw is NOT running.

Saws in the back of a pickup truck at 60mph - all type of junk/grit can get into you muffler, and then make it to the cylinder.

If you want to see sparks, run it hard at night...

Suck Back?????

No chance of "suck-back" with out the screen Andy?:ices_rofl:

Gary

I've seen this mentioned before several times and there seems to be lots of
cutting up going on about it....

Did I miss something??????????????

Oh yeah spark arrestors,,,, Yeah even with a screen they Stihl will sling a few sparks,,,,,,, LOL :chainsaw: :chainsaw: :chainsaw:

I recall recently here in WA a kid was convicted and fined for riding his dirt bike on trails without a spark arrestor. A wildfire was started and most of the cost to fight it were lumped into his fine (I forget the figure...)

I use my screen...can't afford not to.

I keep them in my saws...

... and I still caught a log on fire with my E-tech 353.

I won't be caught in the woods without one. Im with LiveWire, can't afford that !

saw is only used for limbing on private property switched to 12"bar from 16". The big cuts go to Makita 6401 from HD.

There is no such screens on any saws here in Norway, so it can't really be an issue.

Would the exhaust port pull a vacumn when pull starting a saw? If so dust and dirt may damage the piston correct?

No spark arestors on my race saws, but that's another story.
All of my working saw's have screens, have to on National Forest. Just a good idea to have them in my opinion.

Andy

Should I add an eigth inch hole and cover both openings with screens to be safe, the saw is mainly used for limbs that fall and cleanup?
