Yes.

The deffinition of an arborist is:A specialist in the care of woody plants, especially trees.

So to properly trim/prune trees you must be somewhat specialized over a basic tree worker.

No you dont have to be certified or anything like that.

You do seem to ask some crank yanking stupid questions at times. But i think that your just trying to learn, from a very basic foundation.

Stumped, to answer your question, no, you don't HAVE to be an arborist (in most cities across the US). There are plenty of hacks out there that are working mostly legally.

Let's talk "shoulds."

I think it is more that one who works properly with trees is an arborist.

So to reverse your question, one has to work with trees to be an arborist.

One as to be an arborist to not be a hack.

One must also differentiate between Arborist and ISA-CA. The latter is an indipendant proffesional credential that is copywriten.

Lumberjack, you may have just violated Rules 5, 10 and 12. Hope you're ready for a vacation--a moderator kicked a guy off for criticism very similar to but far less crude and blunt than yours. Of course that was directed at the moderator himself, so we'll see if you even get a warning.

my answer is, yes, you need to be an arborist to trim trees. If you don't do it well you are hacking, butchering, maiming etc., but not trimming, and you are not acting as an arborist.

i agree with this post fully..apart from one thing what is 'a basic tree worker' ??.i dont think there is such a thing ;)

Do you need to be an arborist to trim/take down trees? Short answer is, no. To do treework you should learn all you can about trees. You're offering the customer a service and the more you know the better/more value service you have to offer. The more you know the more you know you don't know everything. The next question is do you know an arborist you can call on when you're stumped by what's going on with these trees? The customer is going to ask questions and how are you going to sell the customer on hiring you if you don't know and don't an arborist to call for an answer? It makes a difference on can you sell the customer on hiring you for the job. The more you know the better the chances of you being hired and the better the odds of you getting called back for more work later. It's a service and the more you know about trees the better the service you can offer. The better the job you can do. There is a small niche out there for the "Hack em and Whack em tree guys". The whole world opens up to the tree guys that know about trees, also known as Arborists. How big is your world going to be?

The big orange tree monkeys and other hacks that use unrated ropes from lowes for everything, and then spike on everything.

Well treeseer, lets make it worth it.

#5 You are not permitted to post or mention any material or information that defames, abuses, or threatens physical or emotional harm or death to others or oneself.

#10 You are not permitted to post or mention information that contains content intended to victimize, harass, degrade, or intimidate an individual or group of individuals on the basis of religion, gender, race, ethnicity, age, disability, or sexual orientation. Hate speech of any type will result in suspension at ArboristSite.com.

#12 You are not permitted to harass other members at ArboristSite.com. This includes offensive remarks or remarks that attempt to provoke another member. Sarcastic baiting is also not permitted. If you disagree with someone, state why, but do not resort to name calling, threats, etc…

You have violated those same rules because you OFFENED me. You have upset my emotional balance, so therefore you have have emotionally harmed me by verbally abusing me saying that i am "crude and blunt".

You degraded me by calling me crude and blunt.

And now your provoking a response from me.

So if I am as are you, but then again, stabbing at the mods saying, "...so we'll see if you even get a warning." Report my post, if there is a problem with it then I expect to hear about it. However stating the obvious doesnt seem to violate the rules.

So if I did, so did you.

Cant walk through life on eggshells.

YES! In Connecticut to do anything to a tree other than kill it you must be a Ct licensed arborist (not that mail order ISA crap either) or under the direction of one. A Ct arborist can have up 10 people working under that one license. I am working too ???? hard to get that license for some hack to take work away from qualified professionals at low cost and low quality it makes us all look bad and its bad for biz. I take my job seriously. You guys dont like giving advice to outsiders on forums, right. So listen up Ct Yankee hacks, I am watchig you! I may not report you, but I will kick your arse!

I wasnt flaming stumped, just saying that his post werent worded in the best way sometimes. Also I said that I think he is trying to learn, if he werent then I would call him a troll.

Thought you'd appreciated that MB. I'm sure other states are diff but if I am paying you to prune my trees I want proof you know what a bark collar is. Lots of guys consider "elevations" as far as your pole saw reaches is pruning. Some moron in our state assembley (his brother in law probably mows lawns and want to make an extra buck) proposed a bill #133 to allow non arborists to prune. It is essentially dead now, we are a tight group and act fast here, too much money at stake, we're not exactly a poor state eh?

I recently took a class in CT at the Agricultural Station, it was amazing to see how many people have bean in business for a long period of time and they offer Arborist services without the lisence...if i remember correctly, the fine for not having it and gettin caught was something like $1200 per day fine.(in CT)

(ct.) Also Has Tree Wardens!! Id Really Like To Find Out How One Can Train For Such. (ct.) & The Other New England States Are Tough On All Their Licensing. Id Rather Have Their Certification Than The I.s.a!!!!! Doug Lxt..
