I just recieved 3 unknown Stihl saws. There are no tags left on these to determine there model numbers. Are there any numbers on the saw that can help me figure out what they are? # locations would help also.
thanks!!

On most Stihl's the serail number is up near the muffler, on the right of it, on a small square pad. Take those numbers to your dealer and sometimes, not all times, they can find out not only what the saw is but who bought it new.

Post some pics of those saws and most likely someone can tell you what models those Stihl's are..

There is a flat pad that you can get serial # off of..

Don't see any by the muffer. Does anyone know of a free site that will host pics for me?

You can host your pics right here. Check out the 'Additional Options' below the 'Submit Reply' radio button when you post. Click on 'Manage Attachments', select the 'Browse' option on the popup, select your pic, then upload it. Slick and easy....

Let's see those old Stihls!

here they are. I shot my 029 to compare. the last small one has no numbers by the muffler. Found the ones of the other two. Sorry for the middle pic of the "pro", it has a decomp. valve.
thanks

Left to right, 025, 036Pro, 044, and a 029.

So the older the saw the smaller? that 044 is about the same size as my 029 if not smaller.
thanks

The 029 is known for being a bit bulky for its power output and displacement.

The 044 is a better design, that makes more power, and packs a larger displacement into a similar size package.

Looks like you just hit a Grand Slam! Nice saws.

Nice work Thall, but who would expect less from ya? Had two of 'em, was scratchin' ma head on the third, was in the ball park though.

Thall, you are an expert in your field. Nice work.

Mark

Was no biggie Mark. Lake too could have named them saws off in a hurry. We have seen so many of them they aren't hard to idenify with. I'll take ya compliment though and in return I'm still grinning at what you pulled on Jeff in that 3120 thread, that was good, lolol

I totally agree with thall except I can't for sure say the one on the far left is an 025 instead of an 021 or possibly the even less popular 023. Its probably a fairly safe assumption stating its an 025 since it was the most popular, but by the pic there is no way to tell.

Also one other thing to note the 044 I believe is a fairly old one. If you give Thall or Lakeside the serial # they should be able to tell you if it has the 10 or 12mm wristpin on it.

Each STIHL model has a unique series number, which also makes up the first four digits of any part originally made for that series saw. Look on the bottom of the handle for the part number, and see what the first four numbers are, then look at this list, and you will at least be close to which saw you have. For the 1121 series, you may have a 024, 026, 026 Pro, or MS 260. The only way to tell for sure is to measure the bore, or look at other features, and even then it can be hard. At least with the series number you can look at the right parts list.
