i spike to the top and then when i get to the crown, instead of having my lanyard as my only point of attachment i bring my climb line up with me and i put my line around the highest middle frond i can reach. i use the drt split tail method. this way i have less stress on my legs and can kinda just hang and use my spikes as stability. anyone else do this?

I'll spike up with my wire core, then at the top sit in my lanyard which I have moved from the side D to the bridge and get it over the fronds like you say,its plenty long enough to move around the crown with, SO much nicer to sit in the harness properly than gut bust from the side D's....

Just below the crown I'll use an adjustable friction saver with my main line in it, snug and ready for the descent, when all is done, remove my lanyard...spike down to the FS, and otis elevator to the ground!

bermie.....am i crazy for trusting one of the upper fronds to hold my weight?

I trim them very similuar to the way you do.The only difference is I use a ladder to get up as high as I can before spiking.

I have cut the top rung from both of my ladders[24' and 32'] and fabbed a strong u-bracket that fits against the round trunk, and allows a bit of the top side rails to go outside the trunk on each side.

I set up my split tail around the center 5or 6 fronds if its a cabbage or some other palm with small weak fronds ,2-4 if its a queen, coco,or royal with big fronds.
Never around just 1.And use the lanyard also when cutting.

I descend slow,so as to not burn the fronds.
Its a ##### to pull the rope back out sometimes ,but well worth the safety factor.

What I do is considered extreme paranoia to most around here, but I dont give a ####.
I have come too far now to skid down or do a backflip out of a dam palm tree.
I don't bounce as good as I used to.

Always 2 TIPs for any cut including palms. We also use a lifeline and the number of fronds depends on the type of palm.

Ozzy there are old climbers and bold climbers but.... ah you know how it goes. Stay safe brother.

Depends how much you weigh:)

If you think about it, an upper frond has all the other ones below it to back it up...but hey, I always err on the side of caution and go around at least two.

Hey Ozzy, I like your ladder adaptation, and I've been known to have three attachment points from time to time on a wibbly wobbly one...ain't no one up there but YOU so do what YOU want!!!

I sometimes do them Like that my self. But I mostly work off my gaffs. Depends what I am doing up there.
I always descend on my climbing line to get down. I'll use one or two fronds no problem, but I run my line around the palm, then over a frond. so my attachment is opposite where I,m coming down. Go over to many fronds and its hard to get your rope out some times. Don't know if Id trust hanging straight down on one frond though. Beast.

Sorry the pics are too big to upload, but the above link will take you to my wife's photobucket.

edit: remembered how to bring them up.

Used 2 pcs of flat stock with 4 1/4 in holes mounted to inside of ladder frame, stainless bolts w/ nylon lock nuts on each side .

Cross bar was 2 pcs of rebar ,bent with a mapgas torch and welded together and to the flat end plates.

Beats the heck out of a shaky ladder.

most sables and queens can be done with a ladder 32' or shorter here in south fl, taller Washingtonian, sometimes a 40'ter I'm 6'3 so i can reach most with a ladder my foreman even think a landyard is a waist of time it all about
the # not safety

it suppose to be a top tree company the problem no one in forces safety
you brake out your rope and harness they look at you crazy.but it a good work out moving the ladder from one tree to another climbing cutting after about 30 palms you fill like death
