does anyone else do this when trimming a palm?

i mean like for wrapping it around the trunk under the crown. i think might try getting one of those leather tube friction savers so i dont have to untie my climb line, pass it through the friction saver rings and then re tie it. i can just pass it over a couple of fronds.

what is a good friction saver length to use on most coco palms?

I have a 36" FS...I make it adjustable by tying a prussic on one end with a biner clipped into it, slide the prussic to fit the trunk, rope goes through biner instead of ring. That way it fits almost any size coconut under the crown.
Lanyard in over a few fronds for the work...finish, loose off lanyard, come down far enough to load FS, remove lanyard, then rappel to the bottom.

? Ive spike palms before on removals but not pruning plus here you can get fine by the county but for you guys that, do spike prune palms how many times a year do you trim the same palm, and what type of gaff pole or tree

You get fined for spiking a palm but are allowed to climb a ladder 32 feet up with no tie-in?

SPEAKING OF PALMS

I have to start on 60 of them tomorrow.
About 25 of them are cabbage, can spike them all I want .
The rest are queens I can reach the crowns with a ladder,except4 of them if memory serves me correct from last year.I usually spike the last 8 or 10 feet of the trunk .

Even though I'm doing 60 of them by hand it's still T.I.T.S for me.

I gotta spread it around, Ozzy.

i have allways used tree gaffs and have never tried pole gaffs for cocopalms. i might just have to order a pair if it makes that much of a difference

I don't know of anyone who uses tree gaffs for climbing coconut palms. On most cocos the gaffs will only go in about 1/4 to 1/3 of an inch. Tree gaffs put your foot so far way from the trunk you lose a lot of stability plus it is much more tiring.

I do a few thousand a year. In the past 30 days I trimmed 320. Right now, cocos make up about 60% of my income.

All I have are tree gaffs, use what I got!
I must admit up high on a skinny trunk it can be interesting...

Maybe I'm half asleep, but you kinda look like a Sherpa floating in mid air, next to a palm.

When we did Katrina a few yrs ago, I got to climb my first palm. We were hauling C&D (construction and demolition debris) not trimming trees, although there was a lot of side work for trees. We were demo'ing an appt complex, and I decided to throw on the belt and hooks and climb my first palm. Got about 30 ft up, and I noticed the trucks were moving to the next block over. I hurried down, gaffs cut out about 10 ft from the ground, and I rode the tree down. Skinned the inside of my forearms bad. (In hindsight, I did a lot of stupid #### when I was a little younger...)

A couple of weeks later I was in San Antonio, having breakfast with a friend. I noticed these little pimple-looking things on the inside of my forearms. I popped one. A piece of wood shaped like pencil lead and about an inch long shot out of my arm. There were hundreds of them. I was disgusted.

I'll let you guys mess around with the palms :)
