I forgot to ask in my last post. It looks like my 272xp is going to be put on the shelf and I will be ordering the D7900. The dogs on my 272xp with a 24" bar are not as agressive and prominent as the Dolmar. If I go to a 24" bar on the Dolmar, will the difference in the dogs offer less of a cutting length or should I go with a 28" bar to compensate for the larger dogs. I read a post that said the saw is well balanced with a 24" bar and may be a little heavy in the nose with a 28" bar. I won't need the full 28" length on a regular basis but its nice to have it if you need it. And it is only a 4" difference. Good thing my wife isn't here to wave her pinky at me!

I don't have my 7900 yet...

I run a 25" bar on both my 361 and 441. On the 361 it is a bit tip heavy but not obnoxious and worth the extra inches over the 20". The 441 balances nicely with the 25".

I know some of the Huskies will interchange with the 7900 and I would find out if yours does, then you can use your old bar/chain. I think balance wise the 24" will be easier and obviously lighter for a large percent of your needs. I have run a 7900 and I will tell you I want a 28" to run on mine. I just know ahead of time it may be a bit tip heavy. I plan on running a 32" skip on my 7900 from time to time.

I don't think you'll really notice the small difference in length caused by the dogs. But if you need an excuse to go with a longer bar, by all means do it.

That's my 3.6 cents worth....

Of course there are those on this site that would recommend you not run anything larger than an 18" on a MS660.

Who is that? :buttkick: :jawdrop: :jawdrop:

...good post btw...........:) :)

Btw (2); The 660 comes standard with a 15" bar here........:jawdrop: :jawdrop:

Since you already have bars and loops in 24", you might as well keep on using them. You won't lose that much length with the longer Dolmar dogs.

The 7900 does balance best with a 20" or 24" bar, and it is a bit tip-heavy with a 28". That said, it isn't *that* tip heavy and if you didn't already have 24" bars laying around I'd suggest you get a 20" and a 28" for that saw; that bar combo has worked great for me so far.

If it were me, but it ain't - I'd attack the other end of the equation and do something about those goofy spikes on the Dolmar to reclaim some bar length.

No way could I have a saw with those Klingon Fighting Whatchamacallits on it... But that's just me.

I was just exaggerating my point, sorry if I offended anyone running an 18" (or smaller) on a MS660. I'm sure they just screammmm!!! Almost as bad as your low back after limbing for a day with it.

Anyone purchase the MS390 with the 36" off ebay??? A bit tip heavy? I wonder if some weekend warrior homeowner bought it as a pruning saw?

Saws have a recommended bar range with the sweet spot(power/length) in the middle. According to Dolmar the 7900 is rated for 20", 24", 28", and 32". There may be situations where a 20" would be better and a few situations where you may be able to get by with the 32". My experience with the 7900 shows that it has plenty of power to pull the 24" and does a fine job pulling the 28".

I agree, use the bar and chains you already have available. Buy either a longer or shorter bar to round out your collection.

Remember you gain roughly 1/2 lb for every 4 inches of bar. The typical 24" bar weighs about 3.5 lbs. The typical 28" bar weighs about 4.0 lbs. And that weight is on the end!

I believe smaller ones are availible, but maybe not instantly - I agree the US standard ones look goofy......;)

There are smaller ones out there that looked smaller-but-practical. I meant to get some shipped over here from overseas a while back, but that idea kinda fell onto the back burner. I guess I'll get back on it...

**Monkeyhanger, if you accept payment through PayPal and want to buy and ship me a bunch of these, I'd be interested. I am sure that they can be easily found in Germany...

4-5 piont

I think the dolmars would look good with the husky style oversized dawgs on it. I prefer 4-5piont spikes anyway. But I guess if I have to put up with it when I get my 7900, I will. It might be worth it to make a set of husky big dawgs fit with some measuring cutting and repositioning of the mounts on the dawgs, and use them as a pattern. Then you could trace and cut more and sell them. Just an idea though. ;) :D  :rockn:

Balance... I just love you guys!

Gary

Balance is generally no big deal, as the wood takes the weight. But I feel like sir lancelot when I run a 42 inch bar on my 066. It's like a walrus on dry land, but once in wood the bar does the work. Wouldn't want to pack it around all day, though. I hate to think what it's like carrying around a 60 inch Canon bar...

I'm just a big palooka, so carryin' an "off-balance" big saw ain't a problem. I sometimes forget not everybody is a big palooka! LOL...:)

Dude, those are SUPER handy if your cutting anything with thick thick bark. They really bite in and help a bunch... As far as the 24" bar on the 7900, I've got a 24" and it seems to be the perfect all around size to have, great for limbing, you can easily reach both sides of the tree, good for felling some of the larger oaks etc... and I use it for bucking all the time. Anything bigger and you'll wanna go with a skip chisel chain, or it takes like 2 days to sharpen your damned chain, lmao. If you do go bigger than 24", make sure you keep extra loops around... I have mine setup like my huskies, I swap bars/chains all the time with them. Ask Scott and Steve at the Cutting Edge on here about it, they set me up and I'm happier than ever...
