Picked one up for the wife today...excellent saw...to say this is in the homeowner category would be foolish...great running saw...I got the 14" bar with the 3/8 picco chain...I was considering getting a 338 husky or a 200 stihl but for the price i could have gotton 2 401's...

The Dolmar PS 401 is a great little saw we have sold hundreds of these to both pro's and homeowners. Very Light for its power, has vertical Piston and Cylinder design and has been around since the early 80's (in 100/102 form) The main issus with the older ones is from sitting around they can rot a fuel line between the tank and the carb. The newer ones last 4 years or so have a newer design fuel line.

Great small saw!!!!!!!!!!! 39cc, 2.3 BHP, 8.8 lbs PHO

Yup, best value in a 40cc saw out there, and THE best <$250 saw you're going to find anywhere. Open up the muffler and retune, it should make a lot of difference. I ran one that had that done to it and it was very impressive when compared to my muffler-modded 34cc Echos.

or 220 lol....its for the wife so i think stock it will be fine...just went to cut some cookies with it and it ripped right through some frozen 10" maple...

Finally!

There is finally another 401 owner! I thought I was the only one in the country. I think you will be very pleased. And like Computeruser said, that muffler is corked. If you chose to remove the plate inside the front of the muffler and adjust the carb, you will find alot more saw.

401 Fan

I took advice from here and purchased one too. Mine gets lots of use. Hope others learn of this jewel.:biggrinbounce2:

Cuttin Scott:

Anything the 401 needs special care with? The oil tank opening is small but other than this, I have been most pleased.

thanks.

Just keep fresh fuel and cleaned and of course keep her sharp and you WILL enjoy many years of service.

What's a good chain for it, Scott? Worth swapping out the bar and running .325 91VP? Not much choice in low-pro 3/8.

for 3/8" lo pro we sell alot of both 91P and 91VS both are alot better than 91VG

I have converted some to .325" they handle it very well I do recommend a HD clutch as well as the sprocket. This is the only Dolmar I recommend Narrow Kerf 95VP chain with.
