I am going to be getting a 5100 soon and was just curious what bar/chain combos. fit this saw? I think i heard at one time that it was the same as the small Husky mount. Is that correct? What size bar do you guys recommend for 3/8" chain? 16" or 18" maybe? Thanks.

Yep, small husky. I think the 18" Oregon bar that it comes with takes 64 dl. I have a 3/8 setup for mine, but haven't gotten around to putting it on yet, and may not. I like the way it cuts with an 18" .325. Have fun with it, it's a great saw.

Cool! I was hoping it was the small mount Husky because i've already got bars for my 357xp. So it will pull an 18" bar in hardwood okay? I can't wait to get it but the dealer sells it w/18" bar and .325 chain which i'm not real crazy about. Thanks for your replies.

mine does great in hardwoods with 3/8. I'm told it will cut slightly faster with 325, but all my stuff wears 3/8, so it does too.
buy it power head only, if possible

I run a 16" 3/8 on my 5100. It is happier than pig in slop with it. I cut almost all hardwoods and have never had a problem with the bar burried. I know it will handle more...

When I made some timed cuts about a year ago, the 3/8 7T was faster than the .325 8T and 9T.

The .325 seemed a little smoother in the cut though. .325 might also be better for people that "thrash" the saw around while limbing.

I run 3/8 on everything like Ralph does, and the saw is fine with it. It has the power to run it efficiently.

Hey fixitguy what dealer are you going to? If you do not mind. I have been on the verge of getting rid of the 026 and trying a 5100. Ace in town had a few dolmars for a while. I asked if they planned on keeping them in stock and they told me they had gotten a good buy and only planned on selling those few they had. They did offer to order me a 5100 if I wanted but I want to put my hands on one before I actually buy. I am also always on the look for a good dealer in our area. PM me the name if you do not want to post.

Thanks Chad

Hey splunk. There are only two dealers within about 50 miles of us that i know of. They are both in Oklahoma City. I called both of them today and neither one had the 5100 or the 7900 in stock!:( The closest of the two is Gene's Mower Service in Bethany. The other one is Ron's Lawn Equipment way down on the South side of okc. I think i'm gonna' just go ahead and order one from Gene's. They have been in business there for over 31 yrs. and seem like real good folks, The price they quoted me was good as well. Oh by the way i bought both of those Dolmar PS 540's that our local Ace hardware had this past summer just cuz i had not ever tried them before. They are pretty decent saws themselves. I still have one brand new one stashed away.

Thanks for the info, let me know what you think of the 5100 and Genes. I am always on the look out for good saw shops. It is very hard to find any that do not look confused when I start asking about parts for my 660 or my 440. I guess most of them deal with smaller saws. I had to go to Smiths Farm and Garden on Portland and 10th in OKC today to pick up a 20" bar. I had loaned out the 440 to my father in law(big mistake) and it came back with a :censored: bar. I really need to get the mac 610 running again as the loaner saw. Anyway I am not a big fan of the afore mentioned dealer as I believe that you could spend a couple hours reading this site and be more knowledgeable than their parts counterman. It is funny that you bought those saws from Ace I was very tempted myself as they offered me a good deal. Anyway thanks for the info.
