finally decided on a dolmar 5100using it to cut firewood commercially,mostly red oak,what would be the better pitch to go with?

3/8 would be your best bet

3/8" Will be your best choice. Atleast 95% of the ones we sell leave with 3/8" 18"

A 14" or 16" bar with 3/8 chain in hardwoods would make the ultimate limb saw. I run 3/8 on an 18" bar in the softwoods we cut out west - like a hot knife through butter.
